Cry me a river: Victoria Pendleton booted off Strictly as viewers find her emotional outbursts 'beyond annoying'

The tears have sprung thick and fast since she joined Strictly Come Dancing.

But despite another display of raw emotion, Victoria Pendleton could not save herself from elimination on Sunday night.

The retired track cyclist and her professional partner Brendan Cole have been culled from the BBC1 show after finishing bottom of the leader board for the third time.

Miss Pendleton appeared to alienate some viewers who said her constant crying was ‘beyond annoying’ and called her ‘whiny.’ As a double Olympic gold medal winner and world champion, the 32-year-old is certainly not used to losing.

But she proved an athletic physique is not enough to ensure success on the dance floor with a series of disappointing performances.

Judge Bruno Tonioli was scathing on
Saturday night’s show, giving her five points out of ten for her salsa
to Robbie Williams’ song Candy.

He
said: ‘When you stand still you are fabulous. You have so much to offer
and you still don’t deliver. Salsa was all in the rhythm and it wasn’t
there.’

Craig Revel Horwood added: ‘Darling, the prop candy sticks had more fluidity.’

Miss Pendleton was so upset after the dance, presenter Tess Daley had to hand her a handkerchief to dab away her tears.

She said: ‘I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. I know, it’s tragic.

‘I’m not a sexy latino dancer. I haven’t had the best results in my Latin dances. I know my dances are quite weak.’

Mr Cole, who was reportedly exasperated by Miss Pendleton’s tearful outbursts during training, could be heard urging her to rein in her emotions.

He muttered: ‘No more tears. Come on, look alive.’

The pair finished last in the leaderboard, which is decided by combining the judges’ scores with the public vote.

On
the results show screened last night (25), they lost a dance-off to
former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan and professional Natalie
Lowe.

Afterwards Mr Cole
said: ‘It’s been an emotional roller-coaster but I said from the start I
was so excited to be paired with Victoria and I haven’t changed my mind
– she has been a diamond to work with.’

Some viewers were less impressed with Miss Pendleton’s histrionics.

The cyclist famously burst into tears after missing out on a gold medal in her final race at this summer’s Olympic Games.

And the waterworks continued on her debut Strictly appearance, twice during the third episode, and again on Saturday.

Before
her final performance, viewer Indi Shambi wrote on Twitter: ‘I swear

Louise Youngs added: ‘Victoria Pendleton cannot take criticism at all, it’s annoying how she always cries.’ Daniel Parker said: ‘Victoria Pendleton. A good looking girl. A very athletic body. An Olympic legend. A truly awful, awful dancer.’

Last month, Miss Pendleton denied she
was a ‘sobbing wreck’, saying: ‘I am thick-skinned and being judged on
my dancing is not something that cuts that deep.

‘Strictly
definitely does put you in a situation where it is fight or flight –
you’re either going to learn and get better or crumble.

‘But
feeling my heart pounding out of my chest and adrenalin coursing
through my veins is something I’ve experienced many times before.

‘And the more I perform, the more I hope people will see that I’m not some sobbing wreck.’

A Strictly insider said:
‘For Victoria to stay for eight weeks is an incredible run and she
should be proud of herself. But she was kept in above her ability. She
lasted longer than other, better dancers such as Richard Arnold and
Colin Salmon. The public wanted to see her do well in the show, but
there has been a change and people are now voting for dance ability.’

Strictly Come Dancing continues to thrash The X Factor in the ratings, with in excess of two million more viewers last night.

The
BBC1 dance show landed an average audience of 10.3 million on Saturday
night – the second highest of this series. ITV1’s singing contest pulled
in an average 8.2 million – even including viewers of its +1 catch-up
channel – continuing its lacklustre ratings for this year.

When you have famous parents like Brooklyn Beckham, you don't have to worry about getting stuck with a boring nanny.

The eldest son of David and Victoria Beckham was left in the care of trusted friend Gordon Ramsay on Saturday night as his parents were otherwise engaged.

The celebrity chef took the 13-year-old and his own son Jack to the boxing match of his friend Ricky Hatton, as he took on Vyacheslav Senchenko.

Gordon and Brooklyn looked engrossed as they sat ringside to watch Ricky Hatton lose his comeback match at the Manchester Arena.

There was no sign of any of Brooklyn's siblings, Romeo, Cruz and Harper, as the 13-year-old was treated to the night out by his parents friend.

And Brooklyn, who is often spotted cheering on his famous football playing dad at his matches, clearly has inherited the love of sports.

The famous family jetted into London from their home in Los Angeles earlier this week and were spotted spending Thanksgiving at the celebrity chef's home as well.

And it seems the Beckhams are set to be spending a lot more time in London, as it was announced that David is leaving his club Los Angeles Galaxy.

Victoria was seen house-hunting on Saturday, reportedly visiting four different South London mansions near the Ramsay's home.

A source told The Sun that the 38-year-old fashion designer has fallen in love with one of the properties she visited, a 10 million mansion which was rented out by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie last year.

'She fell in love with it straight away. It was the most secluded out of all of them,' the source said.

'Wherever David ends up, a house in the capital is a perfect investment. It means Victoria can be close to her blossoming fashion business. And the schools are among the best in the world.'

Thom Evans made sure his girlfriend had a romantic birthday by not only treating her to lunch but an intimate dinner too.

However when Kelly Brook moved into her new place the following day, the rugby-star turned model was nowhere to be seen.

Instead the newly turned 33-year old was helped by an unknown gentleman.

But as she jumped off the removal van, Kelly seemed in a jovial mood, no doubt looking forward to living in her new digs.

Although, her outfit made up of
leopard print jeans, shaggy jumper and suede ankle boots may not have been the
most appropriate choice for a day filled with the rather strenuous
labour of carrying boxes and furniture.

No doubt Thom's muscles earned from an international rugby career would have come in handy, but Kelly made do with an arguably less built man.

On her birthday, Thom took Kelly to lunch at Formosino's in Maida Vale.

The restaurant is known for its stylish decor – art by Maximilian Wiedemann lines the wall – and is one of the most popular places to eat and drink in the area.

And the couple certainly enjoyed their meal, as they left the West London eatery with ear-to-ear smiles on their face.

Dressed in a grey shirt and tie and a
black trench coat, the chiseled model directed his faux fur wearing
partner out of The Wolseley after what must have been an extravagant
meal.

Kelly wore floral jeans and black

She's only in her first trimester, so it's unlikely pregnant singer Rochelle Humes will be showing much.

However, The Saturdays star, 23, looks like she wasn't prepared to show off her mini baby bump just yet as she stepped out in London last week.

Joined by her husband, JLS singer Marvin Humes, the young mother-to-be was wearing a grey poncho, leggings and Isabel Marant wedge trainers.

She completed her look with a quilted cream Chanel bag and black hat.

Meanwhile, her husband looked like he was cultivating a more mature look as he prepares for fatherhood with a new beard.

The newlyweds announced Rochelle's pregnancy on their respective Twitter pages on Thursday evening.

Rochelle wrote: 'I wanted to be the first to tell you…we have some exciting news to share!

'Marvin and I could NOT be more thrilled to announce that we are expecting our first child mid next year.

'We have always dreamt of being parents and the news is the best early Christmas present we could have asked for.

'I know Marvin is going to be a great dad and we're so excited to start a family. Thanks for all of your support and lots of love, Rochelle x.'

Their baby news comes just four months after they tied the knot in Blenheim Palace.

The pregnancy comes somewhat of a surprise to fans because the pair have spent most of their marriage apart – Rochelle flew to Los Angeles less than two weeks after their wedding, only returning earlier this month.

The couple started dating in March 2010 and quickly moved in together, but split eight months later.

However, just three months later they were back together, with Marvin proposing in the Maldives last Christmas.

Following their ceremony, the couple had a 'mini-moon' in Portugal, but plan to have a proper honeymoon this Christmas.

After facing the jungle creatures of the Panic Room, it was not good news for Colin Baker who failed to collect enough stars to keep him in the jungle.

As his and Eric Bristow's boxes were weighed it turned out the darts player had the heavier load which meant he would go back to the camp whilst Colin made his farewells.

The actor joins Nadine Dorries, Linda Robson, Limahl as the fourth person to leave I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.

Just after Ant and Dec joined the campers, Colin's stars were emptied on to the scale, recording a weight of 82 grams.

However, Eric's total weight came to a whopping 262 grams meaning the Doctor Who star was gone.

Lasting 16 days in the camp, Colin made his farewells to his fellow campers who all seemed very sad to see the actor go, but happy that Eric had survived.

Colin was jovial as he made his way over the bridge, a lighter man than when he first entered the jungle.

And as he sat down with Ant and Dec he made it clear that it was 'a completely happy camp.'

He told the presenter duo, 'we all have our moments but we were starving and no one would tell us the football scores!'

Talking about his bond with Rosemary,
the Doctor Who star could not have been more complementary saying, 'she's a

themselves for the fifth eviction taking place the next day.

ANSWER: In a world where the heart was a rational organ, you would have
committed no offence.

You and your partner agreed to a temporary split
and were under no obligation to be faithful.

It seems the break was
almost expressly designed to allow you both some leeway with other
sexual partners.

But in my experience, these kind of pacts rarely follow the logic of
their terms and conditions. You can feel just as jealous during a
temporary separation as you can when you live together.

Of course your partner might not have felt so angry and accusatory had
he also had a fling. He's been given the space to be both wounded and
self-righteous – whereas the truth may be that no one sufficiently
attractive, or interested in him, crossed his path.

Whatever the truth, I
imagine he's cast himself as a man too noble and devoted to stray. He
will argue that he used the space apart to ponder his feelings for you,
while you simply thought: ‘Out of sight, out of mind.'

I've witnessed this particular scenario many times. When couples decide
to take breaks from their relationships, everything that may unfold is
still theoretical. However, when one person is faced with the cold, hard
fact that their partner slept with someone else, the pain is rather
less abstract.

Your brain may say ‘We agreed to go our own way!' but the
heart feels like you never ever split.

That is why the Friends' sitcom plot line, involving Rachel and Ross
having some time apart (during which he sleeps with another girl), led
to much parroting of Ross's justification: ‘We were on a break!' But
Rachel still expected Ross to stay faithful.

It's a little sad and ironic – but not at all unusual – that you had to
have mediocre sex with someone else to realise your core relationship
was the real deal. It is only human when you have been with your partner
some years to wonder what intimacy with another person might be like.
Often, we have to journey away from home to appreciate its true value.

I would allow your partner some time to cool off. Jealousy is a painful,
cruel, impetuous emotion and he needs time to master it. Just say you
made a mistake, then take a step back. You might, however, send trusted
and wise friends in to negotiate on your behalf. After all, he tacitly
allowed you leeway.

When your partner has cooled down, point out that it's better to have
faced this hurdle now, rather than after you're married. If you both now
show the determination to move forward together, you will be stronger –
if less innocent – than before.

Most importantly of all, you won't take one another for granted. What seems like a disaster could be the making of you.

You're not as clever as you think you are so here's why… Do you believe your horoscope

You might think your horoscope is, at times, uncannily accurate about the 'real' you – but check the others.

Although we all like to think we're unique, the choice words for other stars can just as easily apply.

Some believe our star signs are governed by guiding forces, but the truth is we are all very much alike.

Do you believe in psychics and reading your fortune in the stars or do you think it's all a sham

Do you believe in psychics and reading your fortune in the stars or do you think it's all a sham

You might feel statements such as: 'You have a need for other people to like and admire you, and yet you tend to be critical of yourself' sums you up.

Or 'at times you are extroverted, affable and sociable, while at other times you are introverted, wary and reserved.' But these statements could apply to anyone.

In a landmark study, psychologist Bertram Forer told his students they had been personally assessed, and handed them an 'individual analysis' to rate in terms of accuracy.

The Zodiac Horoscope Libra

The Zodiac Horoscope Libra

The majority marked the report as being 85 per cent correct and believed each report had been personally prepared for them.

There was, in fact, only one report and it was made up of lines collected from random horoscopes.

It seems that when we want something
to be true, our brain looks for patterns, ignoring anomalies and instead
focusing on the 'hits'.

So
don't waste time reading your horoscope, says David McRaney, author of
You Are Not So Smart.

And don't believe a psychic who claims they can
see into your heart, because 'all our hearts are much the same'.

Cut-price cashmere: We test Gap, Uniqlo, Mango, Marks & Spencer, Tesco, John Lewis, La Redoute and Primark

Is cut-price cashmere a CON The high street is awash with cheap knits – but are any of them value for money

Cashmere was once a luxury item – but these days you can buy jumpers in the material in almost every High Street shop, from Primark to Tesco, John Lewis to Mango.

The cheap cashmere revolution started in 2005 when import quotas were relaxed and China started exporting huge volumes of it to the EU. The lower end of the market still tends to be dominated by fibres from Chinese goats.

Claire Coleman investigates the truth behind cut-price cashmere…

In spring, the cashmere fibres – finer and softer, yet more durable, than wool – are collected from the underbelly of the goat, by combing or shearing.

After washing, the finest, softest hair is separated from the coarser, outer guard hair. This guard hair is not considered high enough quality for many top-end manufacturers, but, according to industry expert David Mallin, of Cashmere Fibres International, it's this sort you're likely to find on the High Street.

'You get what you pay for,' he says. 'A kilo of fibre, which when spun will make three sweaters, costs around 100. If you're buying a sweater for 50, you can be fairly sure that it hasn't got the highest quality fibre in it.'

If you don't care about your jumper lasting, that might not be a problem, but pilling or bobbling tends to be just one of the issues with cheaper, shorter fibres.

'If you're using longer fibres, they tend not to pill in the same way, but short fibres easily roll themselves into balls,' says Mr Mallin.

Another way to cut costs is to knit the garment more loosely, giving a lighter garment that won't hold its shape as well.

'A traditional cashmere jumper will weigh around 300g,' says David. 'The sort of cheaper jumpers we see coming from China are closer to 200g.'

But while a top-end cashmere sweater can sell for anything from 200 to 300, on the High Street the prices are all under 100, ranging from Tesco's 40 to Gap's 89.95.

To find out how they measured up, we asked SGS, a company that specialises in testing fabrics for the textile industry, to blind test jumpers from eight High Street stores. The results were unexpected…

THE TESTS

We checked five variables to find out:

1. Is it really cashmere
High-powered microscopes were used to check that the samples hadn't been supplemented with wool, angora or any other fibre. All of our jumpers came out as 100 per cent cashmere.

2. Will it lose its shape
While washing instructions ranged from 'dry clean only' to 'machine wash at 40c', as most people wash cashmere on a cool machine cycle, we laundered all the jumpers at 30c and let them dry flat. They were measured before and after washing to see how well they kept their shape. 'Most retailers wouldn't put up with change of more than about 5 per cent maximum,' says Michelle Stead from the testing laboratory.

3. Does it hold its colour
A sample of each jumper was washed at 30C with strips of different white fabrics. The strips were checked for any colour, and the sample was checked to see if it had lost colour. The results for each fabric and the original sample are graded and we then averaged them out to give a percentage for colour fastness.

4. Will it go bobbly
A sample is repeatedly rubbed to see to what extent it pills, or bobbles. The result is given a rating from one (the worst) to five (the best). 'You'd hope for a figure of at least four,' says Michelle.

5. Weight
We also weighed all the jumpers to give us a rough idea of how much cashmere had been used.

THE RESULTSFIRST PLACE – UNIQLO

Grey Uniqlo V-neck, 79.90

Grey Uniqlo V-neck, 79.90

Grey V-neck, 79.90

Washing instructions: Dry clean

Weight: 174g

Colour fastness: 100%

Resistance to pilling: 3/5

Shrinkage after washing: Width -4.1%, length -3.2%, sleeve length +2.9%

Fit: Quite slim fitting, with a bit of extra length in the arms. I'd probably go for a size up and roll the sleeves back.

Verdict:
This was the overall winner of our test, coming out joint best for
pilling and, despite the dry clean only label, best when it came to
keeping its shape and its colour – although as it was one of the
lightest jumpers we tried, that might have swayed the result.

Keep an
eye out for cut-price promotions as Uniqlo often mark these jumpers
down, making them even better value.

JOINT SECOND – GAP

Gap, Blue V-neck, 89.95

Gap, Blue V-neck, 89.95

Blue V-neck, 89.95

Washing instructions: Dry clean

Weight: 220g

Colour fastness: 88.6%

Resistance to pilling: 2/5

Shrinkage after washing: Width -4.1%, length -3.2%, sleeve length +2.9%

Fit:
Slouchy fit but still nice and snug across the shoulders – liked the
middle seam down the centre of the back as an added design detail.

Verdict:
This was the heaviest of all the jumpers we weighed – and although
that's partly because it's a slightly bigger fit than the rest, it does
feel more substantial.

Even though the instructions were dry clean only,
it didn't do badly on our wash test.

Score: 6/10

JOINT SECOND – MANGO

Mango, Camel V-neck, 79.99

Mango, Camel V-neck, 79.99

Camel V-neck, 79.99

Washing instructions: Handwash at 30C

Weight: 194g

Colour fastness: 98.6%

Resistance to pilling: 2/5

Shrinkage after washing: Width 4.6%, length +0.4%, sleeve length +1.5%

Fit: Quite wide in the body but sleeves very narrow; looser, more tunic-like fit around waist.

Verdict:
Although this jumper washed well and has a decent weight to it, it was
joint worst with La Redoute when it came to pilling and it lost a point
for the slightly strange fit.

Score: 6/10

TRIPLE THIRD – MARKS & SPENCER

Marks & Spencer, Pale Blue V-neck, 79

Marks & Spencer, Pale Blue V-neck, 79

Pale blue V-neck, 79

Washing instructions: Wash at 30C

Weight: 178g

Colour fastness: 91.4%

Resistance to pilling: 2/5

Shrinkage after washing: Width -9.6%, length -1.35%, sleeve length -0.4%

Fit:
Very long in the body but otherwise a fairly traditional fit with nice
shape across the shoulders and sleeves that are the right length.

Verdict:
Although this jumper put in an average performance across most of our
tests, it lost almost 10 per cent of its width after just one wash,
despite the fact that the label advises washing at 30c – that's a
disappointing result for a company like M&S that usually prides
itself on the quality of its clothes.

Score: 5/10

TRIPLE THIRD – FLORENCE & FRED AT TESCO

Florence & Fred at Tesco, Coral V-neck, 40

Florence & Fred at Tesco, Coral V-neck, 40

Coral V-neck, 40

Washing instructions: Wash at 40C

Weight: 146g

Colour fastness: 98.6%

Resistance to pilling: 2/5

Shrinkage after washing: Width -4.5%, length -2.45%, sleeve length -0%

Fit:
Feels soft and looks fluffy; nice ruched shoulder detail but sleeves
are bracelet length and body comes up shorter than on others and it bags
a bit above the waistband.

Verdict:
The lightest of all the jumpers we weighed – and it looks and feels
pretty flimsy, too. While it held its shape and colour well, it doesn't
have a lot of longevity.

The style, price and performance have it pegged
as throwaway fashion so don't expect to be wearing it this time next
year. Layer it with a long-sleeved vest if you actually want to stay
warm.

JOINT THIRD – LA REDOUTE

La Redoute, Dark Green V-neck, 69

La Redoute, Dark Green V-neck, 69

Dark green V-neck, 69

Washing instructions: Hand wash

Weight: 158g

Colour fastness: 91.4%

Resistance to pilling: 2/5

Shrinkage after washing: Width -3.9%, length -1.05%, sleeve length +1.2%

Fit: Doesn't feel particularly fitted or form flattering.

Verdict:
Another very lightweight jumper that might have washed well overall but
did particularly badly in the pilling test and didn't do much for us
when it came to fit.

We say spend the extra tenner and get the Uniqlo
one instead.

Score: 5/10

FOURTH PLACE – PRIMARK

Primark, Black turtleneck, 42

Primark, Black turtleneck, 42

Black turtle neck, 42

Washing instructions: Dry clean or handwash cold

Weight: 190g

Colour fastness: 88.6%

Resistance to pilling: 2/5

Shrinkage after washing: Width -4.55%, length -7.2%, sleeve length -6.7%

Fit: Slightly long in the sleeves but otherwise a good classic fitting roll neck and not as lightweight as you might think.

Verdict:
Admittedly we didn't follow the washing instructions so maybe we
shouldn't be surprised that it shrank quite dramatically, losing over
4cm in length on the body and around 3cm on the sleeves – but
realistically, who's going to handwash a Primark jumper

The impressive
price for the weight gives it an extra point.

Score: 4/10

BOTTOM OF THE LEAGUE – JOHN LEWIS

John Lewis, Purple V-neck, 69

John Lewis, Purple V-neck, 69

Purple V-neck, 69

Washing instructions: Wash at 40c

Weight: 176g

Colour fastness: 84.2%

Resistance to pilling: 3/5

Shrinkage after washing: Width -8.55%, length -3.3%, sleeve length -4.9%

Fit: Narrow rib at waist and cuffs makes it seem more delicate, as does the rolled seam at the neck – slightly shorter in length than others.

Verdict: Despite saying it could be washed at 40c, this jumper shrank more than most when washed at 30c, losing 3.5cm off the width.

And, even though the colour change was only marginal, it also came off worst in the colour fastness test.

On the plus side it didn't pill as much as others, but a score of three out of five is still lower than the lab would expect from a quality retailer.
