Created in 2006, the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program encourages women to cut and donate their hair so it can be turned into real-hair wigs.
The wigs are then distributed free of charge at American Cancer Society Wig Banks to women across the US who are undergoing cancer treatment.
Miss Deschanel is equally as enthusiastic about the cause, saying: 'Pantene is helping to provide confidence and beautiful real-hair wigs to women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment; you can’t put a price on that.'
The New Girl star told Allure she can't chop her own hair because of acting roles – and the last time she had decent cut was 10 years ago.
'But what I can do is encourage others who can to do it,' she said.
Miss Deschanel is well-known for her indie band She & Him and her roles in 500 Days of Summer, Elf, and more recently her portrayal of Jess in FOX’s New Girl.
She is also a founder and frequent contributor to the popular
lifestyle blog Hello Giggles, which she describes as the 'ultimate entertainment destination for smart, independent and creative females'.
