They were delighted at being sent through to bootcamp during their first audition on the X Factor.

But on tonight's episode viewers will watch a third of the 211 acts axed from the competition – before they have even had chance to sing.

Judges Gary Barlow, Tulisa Contostavlos, Nicole Scherzinger and Louis Walsh send a large number of the wannabes home without hearing them perform.

The rejects are lulled into a false
sense of security and are seen enjoying a welcome party with former
contestants JLS before their dreams are cruelly crushed.

Marvin Humes tells the contestants: 'I’m looking at an X Factor winner right here.'

While his bandmate Ortise provides words of encouragement: This is an opportunity that comes once in a lifetime, so you
have to make sure you take it with both hands, you know who wants it the
most, and it’s who wants it the most that will get it.'

After enjoying the party the contestants gather together to learn who will be facing the axe – and as dreams as crushed emotions are running high.

Speaking about the decision Gary says: 'We’ve made a good call today and
it gives the other two thirds of people who are a left a good chance of
learning something going forward in this competition.'

Louis adds: 'I know we are doing the right thing, I know it’s tough, but that’s show business.'

The acts that do remain they are put into groups and asked to work together which leads to plenty of tensions and tantrums.

The bootcamp stage of the competition whittles down the acts fighting for those crucial spots at the judges houses.
