Worth the wait, Kate: Royal”s balcony kiss voted nation’s favourite TV moment of 2011 – just ahead of Fatima”s jungle wrestle with cockroach
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge”s kiss on the balcony of Buckingham Palace has been revealed as the nation’s favourite TV moment of 2011.
But the duchess was not the only Middleton in the top ten as her sister’s appearance as a bridesmaid came third in the poll, and second among men.
They were only separated by Fatima Whitbread whose struggle with a cockroach after it went up her nose had taken overall second place.
2011 TV highlight: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge”s balcony kiss on their wedding day topped a poll of the nation”s favourite moments this year
Younger sister Pippa Middleton, who was maid of honour at the wedding, won plaudits for her shapely derriere as she followed her sister into Westminster Abbey earlier this year.
So much so it won 14 per cent of the male vote for the top TV moment and just short of 10 per cent overall, in a poll released by digital TV service Freeview.
Just over a quarter of those polled, 26 per cent, picked the romantic moment from Kate and William’s wedding day, as the televisual highlight of the year.
Fatima Whitbread’s encounter with the cockroach took 14 per cent of the vote for second place and in fourth was the sight of Russell Grant being fired out of a cannon on the Strictly Come Dancing episode from Wembley Arena which got about six per cent of the vote.
The other Middleton: Pippa”s appearance at the Royal Wedding was voted the third favourite TV moment of 2011
Other top ten moments included Steve Coogan”s argument with former News of the World journalist Paul McMullan on Newsnight and Jedward getting electrocuted on Big Brother as well as the EastEnders baby-swap storyline.
Researchers questioned 1,000 adults online for the poll which was carried out on behalf of Freeview.
But while Pippa Middleton clearly stuck in many men’s minds, among women only one in 25, or four per cent of women, singled it out.
The marriage of William and Kate was watched by 26.2million television viewers across BBC1, ITV1, BBC News channel and Sky, the biggest audience of 2011.

Back to reality: The Olympic Champion after the ordeal
It was the BBC’s coverage which won the biggest share of viewers on the day with 13.4million, more than three times that of ITV.
The total figure for the Royal Wedding is thought to be the tenth biggest audience in history, although still well behind the 28.4 million who watched Prince Charles and Lady Diana’s wedding in 1981.
The X Factor final was the most watched show on a single channel with 13.7 million seeing Little Mix win the contest on ITV, taking into account those watching on catch-up television such as time-shifted channels or digital recorders.
In the survey Ant ‘n’ Dec narrowly beat Gary Barlow as favourite TV stars of 2011 as Downton Abbey actress Michelle Dockery topped the list of female TV stars in 2011 and was fifth overall.
The Geordie partnership got 13 per cent of the vote, ahead of the Take That star with 11 per cent. Matt Smith, star of Doctor Who got eight per cent while Strictly Come Dancing winner Harry Judd was next with seven per cent.
The survey also showed that one in ten are already making plans to take annual leave to watch the Olympics on TV and one in six men plan time off to watch Euro 2012 on TV.
The one and only: Russell Grant was fired out of a cannon on Strictly Come Dancing, which was our fourth favourite TV moment
The most hotly anticipated non-sporting moment next year is the return of Downton Abbey.
A spokesman for Freeview said: ‘Over the last 12 months, viewers across the nation have been captivated by great TV drama, structured reality programmes, compelling soap storylines and of course the royal wedding.’
