Now that's a real hot shot! World's hottest chilli vodka made from fiery naga pepper goes on sale at Selfridges
Warning! The 100,000 Scovilles Naga Chilli Vodka is seriously hot
The hottest chilli vodka in the world is to go on sale at Selfridges.
The Naga Chilli Vodka rates 100,000 on the Scoville scale – the international method of measuring the heat in a chilli – making it the most potent chilli vodka ever to be sold in the world.
The chilli used in the vodka is the Naga Jolokia – known to be the hottest chilli in the world, and hotter than most law-enforcement grade pepper sprays.
The drink is made by fermenting vodka
with 18kg of the fiery peppers. The resulting concoction is left for
several weeks to infuse.
Once the vodka has turned a dark caramel colour, the infusion is complete and the vodka can be bottled.
Expert mixologist recommend the new
vodka is used in a classic Bloody Mary for a drink with extra kick. The
resulting spirit is twice as hot as Tabasco, and on a par with the level
of heat from a Habanero or Scotch bonnet chilli.
Dangerous: The Naga Jolokia chilli is fiercely hot and can be hazardous if ingested raw or unprocessed
Dawn Davies, Selfridges' Spirits expert says 'This product is truly one of a kind and we anticipate the type of customer to buy this will be a chilli connoisseur who understands the rarity and incredible strength of such a product.
HOT OFF THE PRESS
The Scoville scale is named after Wilbur Scoville who developed the test in 1912.
'We have a huge customer following for anything spicy, from our range of Tabasco products, the 1.7 million scoville chilli sauce and now our new Naga Chilli Vodka.
'Selfridges sells over 30 different chilli products, the most popular being the gallon of Tabasco.'
'We hope our customers enjoy this brand new product and use it with caution!'
BLOODY SCARY COCKTAIL
Selfridges' mixologists have come up
with a clever way of incorporating this spicy little number into a
recipe to help with the mother of all hangovers: A devilishly spicy Bloody Mary made with 100,000 Scovilles Naga Chilli Vodka
50ml 100,000 Scovilles Naga Chilli Vodka
100ml Tomato Juice
Juice of half a lemon
Dash of Worcestershire Sauce
Dash of Tabasco
Few dashes of Bitter Truth Celery Bitters
Few dashes of Master of Malt Chipotle Bitters
Pinch of salt
Pinch of freshly ground black pepper
Garnish: Celery stick, a slice of cucumber and a plum tomato
Few ml olive oil.
Combine the ingredients in an ice-filled Boston Shaker and gentle roll them (do not shake) for about 30 seconds. Once thoroughly chilled, pour through a strainer into a Hurricane glass or Highball. Top with a grind or two or fresh black pepper and a glug of Olive Oil. Make cuts in the celery, cucumber and tomato so that they may be pushed onto the rim of the glass, then add a couple of straws.
