Why does Geri ALWAYS date Mr Wrong How Miss Halliwell is always unlucky in love
07:24 GMT, 29 August 2012
The title isn’t one to covet, but if there were an award for the most unlucky-in-love woman in showbusiness, Geri Halliwell would surely win it.
For the former Spice Girl, who turned 40 this month, has enjoyed 13 romances since finding fame — and so far all have ended in disaster.
That she managed to get engaged to three of her male companions, and have a baby with one, is easy to forget: Geri is better known for affairs that finish almost as soon as they’ve begun.
The odd couple: Comedian Russell Brand, centre, stands next to Geri Halliwell, right, and her fellow Spice Girl band mates Melanie Chisolm, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, and Victoria Beckham back in 2007
A decade ago, she sighed: ‘I think we all know that relationships haven’t been one of my strong points.’
Enter her latest Mr Wrong: Russell Brand — a man known for his extremely high self-regard, former sex addiction and failed marriage to U.S. pop singer Katy Perry.
Geri and he reportedly struck up a romance after meeting during the closing ceremony of the Olympics earlier this month.
On Saturday, the pair held hands as they took Geri’s six-year-old daughter Bluebell on a tour of Hampton Court Palace. And, last Thursday, the couple kissed during a picnic on London’s Hampstead Heath.
News of the romance will certainly help boost the profiles of two celebrities in need of some good publicity.
New couple! Geri Halliwell has reportedly
started dating Russell Brand after hitting it off with him at the
Olympics Closing Ceremony earlier this month
Geri is busy staging a pop comeback on the back of the Spice Girls’ reunion at the Olympic closing ceremony. She is promoting a new musical featuring the band’s music, Viva Forever!, which is due to open in the West End in November.
Meanwhile, Brand, 37, is recovering from negative headlines following his messy divorce from pop princess Katy, 27.
The self-professed lothario, who once boasted he had slept with 2,000 women, is alleged to have such a high opinion of Geri that he has ended his relationship with model Isabella Brewster — one of five girlfriends he has had since splitting from Katy eight months ago.
Yesterday, a source close to Geri played down the rumoured relationship, saying: ‘They are just friends and have been out a few times. There’s not much else to add at this stage.’
Brand’s spokesman, meanwhile, declined to comment. But Russell is certainly not the first man to have noticed the charms of Miss Halliwell . . .

The romance: Geri, then 25, was said to be ‘crazy’ about Laporta, who ran a firm called Elite Windows. They met in a nightclub. A friend said: ‘He loves the fact that Geri is a Spice Girl.’
The split: She dumped him a few days after the romance became public — saying she was ‘too busy’ for love.
The posh ones
Who: Polo player Jamie Morrison, son of Bryan, a pop publishing tycoon who also owns the Royal Berkshire Polo Club. The first of many high-society squeezes for Geri.
When: Just over a month in 1998.
The romance: They met when Geri rented a castle in County Wicklow for Christmas — it belonged to one of Jamie’s friends and he came over to visit. He invited her horse-riding. ‘I’m very happy with Jamie,’ Geri said. ‘It’s early days, but we have lots in common. He likes music and, believe it or not, I actually like polo.’
The split: Friends of Geri’s said that he was ‘too dull’ for her. In her autobiography, she later noted they had ‘very little in common’.

Who: Henry Beckwith, socialite and heir to the property fortune made by his father, Sir John Beckwith.
When: On and off for two years from 2009 until 2011.
The romance: It was an easy-going affair at first. But, as time went on, Geri became deeply fond of Beckwith and the couple were even said to be secretly engaged.
The split: They finally called it a day last October, when Geri decided that she ‘didn’t trust him’. However, the pair remain on good terms, going to the Boodles Boxing Ball together later that year. Geri’s daughter, Bluebell, is said to be very fond of Henry, and he and Geri have numerous friends in common.

When: On and off during the summer of 2000, and early in 2001.
The romance: In July 2000, Geri was pictured leaving Robbie’s house in Knightsbridge at 1am.
Speculation about a romance reached fever pitch the following month when they went on a much-photographed holiday to the South of France.
The couple were seen together again on a skiing holiday in Switzerland the following January.
At the Brit Awards a few weeks later, Geri presented Robbie with a trophy, saying: ‘According to press reports, he has been giving me one, so now it’s my turn to give him one.’
The split: Came not long after Robbie gave a radio interview saying they were friends who occasionally slept together. Geri was furious and he had to apologise. He later said he had been exasperated by her childish demands and possessive behaviour.

Who: Demian Warner, a former drug addict and son of a wealthy Chicago businessman.
When: Five months in 2002.
The romance: They met at the Cottonwood rehabilitation clinic in Arizona, where Warner was being treated for drug addiction and Geri was receiving counselling for an eating disorder. Within a few weeks they moved in together in Los Angeles.
When she came to the UK, to be a judge on television show Popstars: The Rivals, he came with her and they were inseparable. They got engaged within a few weeks of meeting. A friend said: ‘Geri is over the moon that Demian has asked her to marry him. She’s very much in love.’
The split: The first hint of any trouble came when she shouted at him after he got chatting to another woman during filming. Demian then went back to the U.S., and she dumped him by email.
They had apparently argued over her insistence on a pre-nuptial agreement and an HIV test. It later emerged that he called her ‘Shorty Spice’ and had felt pressured by her into proposing marriage in the first place.
She said later that year: ‘I think becoming famous arrested my development. I was emotionally immature and, as a result, unable to have strong, intimate relationships with men.’
Engaged: Geri Halliwell with former Italian fiance Fabrizio Politi who announced their engagement just one week after meeting in a nightclub
Who: Fabrizio Politi, titchy Italian shipping tycoon.
When: Four months from 2008 into 2009.
The romance: They met in a nightclub in Florence, Italy, and Geri was delighted to announce their engagement just one whirlwind week later, complete with a 150,000 ring. Politi — equally delighted — said he had been waiting for 15 years to find his ideal woman, and knew at once that she was the right one for him.
The split: Politi said Geri suddenly got cold feet about marriage. He remarked: ‘Out of nowhere there was a very bad situation between us.’ Still, he called the liaison ‘the happiest three months of my life’.
Who's the daddy
Who: Sacha Gervasi, a heavy-set screenwriter based in Los Angeles.
When: Six-week fling in the summer of 2005.
The romance: Gervasi, who spent time in rehab in the early Nineties for an addiction to heroin, is well connected and met Geri socially. Their fling was over by the time she realised she was pregnant by him.
He said he wanted to support her and the baby — but he reportedly has yet to even meet Geri’s only child, Bluebell Madonna, who was born in May 2006.
The split: Geri was thrilled to be pregnant and has loved motherhood, but appears to have no tender feelings toward Gervasi.
It is said he first saw the baby on the cover of Hello! magazine, with whom Geri did a deal for an undisclosed amount. He is now married to banking heiress Jessica de Rothschild.

When: Three months in 2001.
The romance: The pair were introduced by Hashemi’s sister, Sahar, who had the same yoga instructor as Geri. Halliwell adored Hashemi, a polo enthusiast, and took lessons in the sport and watched him play at Cowdray Park in West Sussex.
The split: Bobby was horrified when she suggested in December they should move in together, which brought a hasty end to things. He liked the slow pace of the relationship and didn’t want to be rushed into a commitment.
Family friends: Geri Halliwell met Bobby Hashemi through his sister who had the same yoga instructor as the Spice Girl
Who: Duncan James, handsome blond bisexual pop star with the band Blue.
When: The summer of 2004.
The romance: The intimacy sprang up after they were asked to present music festival Party In The Park together. A string of lunch and dinner dates followed, and they were even spotted shopping for lingerie in Victoria’s Secret in Los Angeles together.
The split: In late 2004, James had a fling with former girlfriend Claire Grainger — resulting in daughter Tianie-Finn being born the following year.

Who: Ivan ‘Flipz’ Velez, a backing dancer on the Spice Girls reunion tour.
When: Seven months in 2008.
The romance: Geri fell for Flipz after he was assigned to be the man who held her aloft when she sang It’s Raining Men. Towards the end of the Spice Girls tour, their friendship started to intensify. They conducted their romance in Los Angeles and, in the UK, and he reportedly became close to Bluebell.
The split: Velez was ‘surprised’ when Geri broke up with him over the phone, having apparently realised he wasn’t quite the man of her dreams — even though they had been talking about marriage and children.

Who: David Walliams, dapper metrosexual comedian and author.
When: A six-week dalliance in 2007.
The romance: The pair had known each other on the celebrity circuit for years, but struck up a discreet romance in January. A source said: ‘They are very tactile with each other and he’s such a gent. Geri just can’t stop smiling.’
The split: They never got around to making any public comment about the relationship, so perhaps Walliams was not quite as keen on the romance as she was.

And finally …
Who: Russell Brand, 37, tight-trousered comedian and lothario.
When: Ongoing after romance reportedly sparked earlier this month.
The romance: Speaking after the Olympic closing ceremony, Brand said: ‘I’ve got a crush on Geri Halliwell — everything in the world is how it should be.’ Having been spotted on several dates together, the romance has apparently already become ‘serious’.
But if you add Brand’s track record — which encompasses sex addiction and a brief marriage — together with hers, who would bet on it lasting the course
