Finding the ideal mini-break destination when you have a toddler in tow can be tricky.
We plumped for Calcot Manor, a hotel near Tetbury, Gloucestershire, because it ticked our rather complex list of requirements: child-friendly (the travel cot is set up for your arrival and there’s an on-site creche), a pool decked out with inflatables and a baby-listening service so we could go for dinner once 18-month-old Minnie was asleep.
There’s also a smart restaurant for the aforementioned date and deluxe spa facilities (this was a rare getaway, so we wanted to feel pampered).
Hopi ear candling: Once the candle is placed into your ear and lit the heat and herbs draw out any blockages
It certainly delivered. I had just suffered from a bout of sinusitis so, rather than having my usual spa treat of a facial or massage, I chose a Hopi Ear Candling session.
The ‘candle’ is a tube of linen or cotton, impregnated with beeswax, honey and essential oils. You lie on your side and the candle is placedinto your ear and lit. The heat and herbs then draw out any blockages. It sounds alarming but, aside from a crackling noise, I was oblivious to the fact that a flame was just inches above my cheek; I could feel only a warm, comforting sensation.
And I didn’t have to worry about my hair catching fire – my therapist was there to hold the candle in place.
My therapist then unwrapped the candle to show me the gunk it had drawn out of my lugholes.
If you’re suffering with sinus problems or even hayfever, I’d wholeheartedly recommend putting aside any reservations you may have andgiving it a go.
