Their relationship has been dogged by accusations of cheating on both parts.
And while Lucy Mecklenburgh and Mario Falcone seemed to have put the rumours behind them when they got engaged on-board a luxury yacht in Marbella, Spain, this summer, it would seem their happiness was somewhat short-lived.
Following a series of furious arguments on Wednesday night's episode of The Only Way Is Essex, the couple decided to call off their engagement and get rid of Lucy's sparkling ring once and for all.
It's off! Lucy Mecklenburgh and Mario Falcone decided to call off their engagement on Wednesday night's episode of The Only Way Is Essex
Mario was caught out in Sunday's episode after having sent messages to one of Mick Norcross' 'Sugar Hut Honeys', leaving Lucy reeling that despite making such a big commitment to her, he couldn't seem to put his days of womanising behind him.
She told best pal Lydia Bright: 'It's so frustrating, I live with him, the dogs are there I can't go on a break from him. My dad's moved away and I don't have a bedroom there anymore.
'I'm not a stupid little girl, I know it's not right. But he's not physically cheated on me. I need to get out of the flat and give him some time to work out for himself what he's done wrong.'
'I'm not a silly little girl': Lucy was furious that her fiance had been sending messages to other women
Arguments: The couple became involved in an angry confrontation after Mario dismissed his messages to other girls as 'banter'
The 21-year-old reality star then asked her friend to intervene and call Mario on her behalf.
Speaking to the topless casanova on her mobile, Lydia said: 'She's very very upset, Mario, as you can imagine. She feels you think she's overreacting. She loves you a lot and has asked me to say all this because she finds it hard to talk to you about it.
'She's been through all this before and she feels enough is enough and she has to draw the line.
'What are you going to do about it I can't sit by and see this happen every month. No matter what the messages said, you shouldn't have been speaking to other girls.'
With Mario growing increasingly irate, he brought up both his former indiscretions and when Lucy cheated on him with ex-boyfriend Mark Wright, before claiming the messages were just a spot of friendly banter.
Teary: Lucy admitted she felt frustrated by the situation as she couldn't take a break from the relationship even if she wanted to
He said: 'There's a lot of things that have happened in the past and if I hadn't forgiven her, we wouldn't still be together.
'They were totally different messages to the ones I was sending seven months ago. This time, I was having banter with girls about Arsenal and Tottenham. If it was some fat munter, she wouldn't care.'
With Lucy declaring the situation had gone 'too far' she agreed to meet her fiance to talk things over – but it wasn't long before the situation escalated once again, with Mario labelling Lydia a 'f**ing busy p***k'.
Lucy fumed: 'Everything is wrong with you bantering a girl when it's about them in a leotard.'
Making amends: Mario attempted to patch things up by cooking a meal for Lucy while he was completely nude
'Bad memories': The couple mutually agreed to call off their engagement and decided to get rid of Lucy's sparking ring once and for all
Mario replied: 'I've said I'm f***ing sorry! The boys don't think I've done anything wrong. Yes I admit I'm in the wrong, but it's not the worst thing in the world.'
But making a step to put things right between the pair, Mario cooked dinner for the brunette beauty, presenting it to her completely naked.
And jokes aside, the 24-year-old hunk suggested the couple call off their engagement.
He said: 'We were happy before we were engaged. That ring, to me, is a symbol of the bad memories and everything that's happened over the past few months.'
A friend in need: Earlier in the day, Lucy's best friend Lydia Bright had waded into the argument
Lucy agreed: 'We're getting rid of the ring. It will feel weird without it, though.'
It wasn't all doom and gloom for the TOWIE crew, with Sam Faiers and Joey Essex vowing to spend the rest of their lives together while in the romantic location of the fish market Joey used to work in.
Sam said: 'Sam, you're the one for me, I don't want to go out with anyone else.'
To which Joey replied: 'You're the one I want to be with for the rest of my life, you know that. I love you so much.'
The next step: Elsewhere, Ricky Rayment got down on one knee… to ask Jess Wright to move in with him
Happy couple: A thrilled Jess agreed, despite initially looking a tad worried at what Ricky was going to do
Elsewhere, Ricky Rayment surprised Jess Wright by getting down on one knee – with a key to his flat.
He said: 'I've had thought about us and what we're going to do in the future and I want to show you my commitment. I hope it's not too soon and too much pressure but I wanted to ask you something.'
Jess happily accepted, despite initially looking more than a little nervous at seeing her boyfriend down on one knee.
