It's a birthday he'll be celebrating without his former fiance Michelle Keegan, so Max George's band mates wanted to do something he'd never forget.

On the eve of his 24th, and while on stage in Los Angeles, The Wanted presented their fifth member with a large chocolate cake last night (Wednesday).

However, rather than sing happy birthday and let Max blow the candles out, Jay McGuiness, Siva Kaneswaran, Tom Parker and Nathan Sykes decided to shove it in his face instead – leaving him covered in butter cream.

The British singer took it all in good faith though and was seen with a huge grin on his face as he looked down at the sweet treat.

Wearing a black printed T-shirt and having just performed to a packed out crowd at the Avalon in Hollywood, Max was probably not expecting the stunt.

Their gig was part of an MTV pre-VMA celebration for the awards, which are taking place tonight.

When they left their hotel in the afternoon to head to their rehearsals, they were met by a group of young female fans who came bearing gifts.

The fivesome were more than happy to pose for photos with the girls and as they headed to their waiting car, they had huge smiles on their faces with Max even giving a peace sign to the cameras.
