He's beaten thousands of hopefuls to get through to the live rounds of The Voice after mentor will.i.am chose to keep him on Saturday's show.

But while Tyler James' life is currently scaling new heights, he hasn't always had the best of luck.

The singer has now opened up about a 'terrifying' ordeal a few years ago which resulted in him having to have plastic surgery after a gang of 10 men savagely beat him up.

Tyler, 29, has discussed all to heat magazine and revealed the trauma caused him to develop agoraphobia, while his best pal Amy Winehouse was the one to help him recover from the attack in 2005.

The songwriter has described how he was in Bow in east London when the men approached him and demanded to have his phone. But when he put his hand in his pocket they started to become violent towards him.

He explained to the publication: 'I couldn’t get myself up, I was covered in blood. I felt a
foot go across my nose and I heard it break. It was horrible,
terrifying. I was just waiting to get stabbed.'

Tyler was left with both of his cheekbones broken, while his nose, jaw and three parts of his spine were also left shattered.

He had to have a plastic surgeon reconstruct his face – and he certainly looks different to images which show him in 2005 before the attack, when he first experienced moderate chart success.

The traumatic ordeal resulted in Tyler developing a drinking problem as he was scared to be alone at his house unless he started boozing.

James revealed that he was drinking 'morning, noon and night' for a period of three months.

And to help him move on from the attack he ended up moving in with his friend, late singer Amy Winehouse.

The pair later developed an on/off sexual relationship and he credits the Back to Black hitmaker with helping him to get better following the surgery by making him 'chicken soup'.

He added: 'I’d cry my eyes out… At first it didn’t
feel right to sleep together, but after I got better, it just felt
right. She was my soulmate.'
