When Roxanne Monaghan asked her best friend and sister-in-law Sam to be her birthing partner, she could never have imagined that the women helping to deliver her baby would steal her husband less than a year later.
But 10 months on, that is exactly what happened. After Roxanne, 20, from Aberdare, South Wales, discovered she and husband Dylan were to have their first child, she asked Sam Roberts, the wife of Dylan's stepbrother and the woman she considered to be her best friend, to be present at the birth.
Sam had three children of her own with her fiance Andy, and the close friends were looking forward to joining their families together.
Devastated: Roxanne Monaghan, 20, lost her best friend and her husband at the same time after they ran off together when she was pregnant with her second child
But Roxanne was left devastated when weeks before her first wedding anniversary she discovered Dylan and Sam were having an affair. Roxane was 21 weeks pregnant with her second child.
Shortly afterwards, Dylan, 27, left Roxanne and their 10-month-old son and moved in with his brother’s fiance.
And when Roxanne told him she was too heartbroken to have their second child and planned to terminate the pregnancy, he turned his back.
'What they have done is the ultimate betrayal,' Roxanne said.
'I have lost my husband and a sister-in-law I considered a best friend. I never thought in a million years they’d do this to me.
'They have destroyed my life. I thought we had the perfect family and I loved spending time with Dylan’s brother and his wife. How can your own family do that'
Roxanne now plans to divorce Dylan on the grounds of his affair.
'Sam and I were so close,' she said.
Romantic ideals: Just a year before he ran off with her best friend Sam, Dylan surprised Roxanne with a Valentine's Day wedding – but their marriage was destined to fail before their first anniversary after Dylan confessed to falling for Sam
'He seemed so devoted': Dylan asked Roxanne to move in with him at his mother's house just weeks after they first met
'One day I will have to tell my son that Daddy now lives with the woman who helped deliver him.
'She watched me give birth then stole my husband. What kind of woman does that'
Roxanne, 20, first met Dylan when she worked as a waitress in a local hotel in December 2009.
The former Sky engineer started popping in for drinks and they soon became a couple.
A few months on, when his contract ended, he asked Roxanne to move 200 miles with him, back to his hometown of Kinmel Bay in North Wales.
She remembers: 'We’d only been an item for a few months when he asked me to move to be with him.
Betrayal: Dylan, pictured with sister-in-law Sam Roberts before they admitted their affair, told his wife Roxanne that he realised Sam was his 'soul mate'
'I felt so lucky to have found a best friend': Roxanne Monaghan (right) with her Sam Roberts soon after they met. Right, Dylan seemed close to Sam, but Roxanne never suspected anything untoward
'I thought he was joking at first, but we were crazy about each other so I decided to go for it.'
She left her job and moved into Dylan’s mother’s house in May 2010. A few days later, she met his brother and fiancee Sam.
Roxanne explains: 'Dylan introduced Andy as his big brother and Sam as his sister-in-law and I thought they were both lovely.
'Their three kids all called Dylan their uncle. Sam gave me a hug when she could see I was nervous, which I thought was sweet.'
Roxanne knew Dylan and Andy, 33, weren’t biologically related – they became stepbrothers when Dylan’s mother and Andy’s father got together when they were little.
She recalls: 'As far as Dylan was concerned, they were family and we clicked straight away.
'It was lovely since I was so far away from my own friends and family.'
Sam, 27, gave Roxanne her number and told her to call whenever she felt lonely.
Soon they were meeting up for a coffee most days. A few months later in September 2010, Roxanne found out she was pregnant.
'It was a shock but we were thrilled and I was sure Dylan would be a great dad,' she says.
'He was a brilliant uncle to Sam and Andy’s kids – he doted on them.'
As her pregnancy progressed, Roxanne turned to Sam for advice.
She says: 'She’d been there for me so much it felt natural to ask her to be my birthing partner. She said she was honoured.'
Naive: Roxanne says she never suspected a thing, even when Dylan and Sam left the hospital together to 'get tea' when she was in labour
When she was five months pregnant Dylan said he’d planned a surprise wedding on Valentine’s Day last year.
'I was stunned when he told me to buy a dress,' says Roxanne. 'It was so romantic, I was over the moon.'
As they exchanged vows, Roxanne couldn’t help thinking how lucky she was to have landed a husband, baby and new best friend.
'I really couldn’t have asked for more. I felt like I had it all,' she says. Both Dylan and Sam were by her side when she went into labour in May last year.
But after a few hours they said they were going out to get some tea. They were gone for some time, and ROxanne says she began to get cross.
'I was ready to push but didn’t want my husband to miss our son being born.'
Finally they returned with an excuse about the canteen having been full and having to go back to Dylan’s mother's.
'I was livid they left the hospital while I was in labour,' Roxanne says. 'They were supposed to be helping me, not abandoning me.'
Minutes later, their son Connor Lee was born and Roxanne decided not to ruin the moment by starting a row.
'I was so wrapped up with the baby I just let it go,' she says. But before long, Roxanne did confide in friend Sam that she and Dylan were having some problems.
She told Sam that their sex life had been affected by the baby. But she found Sam was unsympathetic, only replying that her sex life with Andy had always been amazing.'
One weekend in October last year, Dylan offered to drive Roxanne and the baby to see her parents but dropped out at the last minute, and asked Andy to drive her instead.
It was during the trip that Andy voiced concerns over Dylan’s friendship with Sam.
Roxanne says: 'He thought they fancied each other but I told him not to be daft.'
Roxanne told Sam what Andy had said and she laughed and called him paranoid. She said the idea of being with Dylan was sick.
The next month Roxanne told Sam she thought she was pregnant again – and was surprised when Sam looked shocked. She gave Roxanne a pregnancy test which came back positive.
'Sam looked worried but I thought it was because she knew I’d been having problems with Dylan and because Connor was still so young,' Roxanne says.
Roxanne told Dylan about the new baby that night in front of Andy and Sam.
'He was flustered but I thought he’d soon come around. 'But instead he started coming home late and then one night he stayed out all night.'
Dylan stayed out the next night too and got home at 8am, claiming he’d spent the night at Andy’s father's.
Roxanne says: 'I was really angry so I rang Sam and told her I thought he was lying. That’s when she said she knew it was true – she had stayed there too because she’d been arguing with Andy.
'As soon as I heard they’d spent the night under the same roof, an awful feeling crept over me. I thought back to what Andy had said in the car.'
Roxanne called Dylan and accused him of having an affair. But Dylan simply told her he'd been comforting Sam.
'He told me not to be silly. I wanted to believe him. I cooked a nice meal and that night we talked properly and even made love. But when I woke up he was gone.'
That day she got a text from Dylan saying ‘sorry’. When she called back, his phone was off.
When he failed to come home that evening in January, she put the baby in the buggy and set off for Sam’s house.
On the way she bumped into a friend of Sam’s who told her Dylan and Sam had run off together.
'She was surprised I had no idea. I shook my head and said it was impossible. But she told me to go home and pack my bags as they weren’t coming back.
'Suddenly it all started to make sense. Whenever we stayed at their house, Dylan and Sam were always last to bed and first up.
'It had been going on under my nose. How could she listen to my problems knowing she was sleeping with my husband'
Roxanne went home in tears and when Dylan rang she begged for the truth. He didn’t deny he was with Sam, and Roxanne says she was 'destroyed'.
Roxanne moved out the next day. When she heard Dylan had moved in with Sam, she decided to abort the pregnancy at 21 weeks.
She says: 'It was so heartless. How could I cope with a baby, too It was the worst day of my life. In less than 12 months I lost it all.'
Four months on, Dylan is still living with Sam and her children. Andy has moved away but blames Dylan for stealing his fiance.
He says: 'I’ve been in love with Sam for years. It wasn’t some seedy dirty affair.
'We were both having relationship problems and confided in each other. The chemistry turned into something more.
'I did love Roxy when we got married but she changed after we had the baby.
'I’m not going to apologise. I love Sam, she’s my soul mate. We did not have sex while Roxy was in labour.
'I’ve tried to be civil to Roxy and my brother but neither of them will talk to us.'
