It was launched by US choreographer Gary Cockerill in 1977 as a present to his ballerina wife, and The Sanctuary Spa has been putting smiles on the faces of hundreds of thousands of women ever since.

Situated in the centre of London's Covent Garden, the luxurious ladies only retreat now pampers over 60,000 guests every year, while its skin care line is the leading female body care brand in the UK.

The Sanctuary Spa is currently celebrating its 35th birthday, and I decided to join in the festivities by trying out its newest treatment, the Active Reverse Facial.

Developed by skincare expert Nichola Joss, the facial uses the active ingredient Matrixyl Synthe, which is clinically proven to stimulate the production of the six building blocks within your skin and promises to instantly lift the face, reduce fine lines and provide skin with a healthy and youthful glow.

It's aimed at women seeking visible wrinkle reduction and skin lifting effects, but perhaps more importantly, it may just be the most relaxing 55 minutes you'll ever spend.

The intensive facial begins with an exfoliation using the Sanctuary Radiance Exfoliator, followed by a deep massage with the Power Peptide Serum and Lipid Recovery Facial Oil from the Active Reverse range of products.

While the movements are quite vigorous, the enthusiastic therapist incorporates head and shoulder massages to keep my mind and body blissfully relaxed.

My favourite part of the session is the application of the Active Reverse 30 day thermal transformation, a two step mask which seems to breathe life into my face while stimulating cell renewal and feels amazing.

As the treatment ends the results are immediate. My skin is glowing and my complexion is visibly clearer and brighter. However according to the therapist, the extent of the results will not be visible for another two weeks.

Feeling relaxed and rejuvenated, I head downstairs to get a taste of The Sanctuary Spa's extensive facilities which include two swimming pools, two jacuzzis, a hammam, a sauna and a steam room.

'Your skin looks amazing,' a fellow guest tells me as I flick through a magazine in the spa's iconic Koi Carp Lounge.

With a huge grin plastered across my face, I head down to reception to book in my next session.

The Sanctuary Spa Active Reverse Facial is priced at 90 for 55 minutes. The Covent Garden branch is also offering a special 35th Birthday Spa Day throughout the month of October which includes, full use of the spa facilities, a 25 minute treatment and a glass of bubbly and birthday cupcake.
