Johnstone celebrate the A-Z of love. This week, X is for ex.
We were in Egypt; it was our first holiday together. And my recently ex-wife kept showing up. Not in person, but in my head. I couldn’t let go.
Frustrated, my girlfriend snapped: ‘It feels like she’s here on holiday with us.’
At that moment, I knew I had to make a choice; between the past and the future. Fortunately, I choose the latter.
Moving on: You can't go forward while looking backwards
My girlfriend is now my wife and we have two beautiful children together.
My ex-wife is now, as the song goes, ‘just someone I used to know.’
Moving on isn’t always easy — but it is necessary. After all, you can’t move forward while looking backwards: you can’t create the future while living in the past. So here’s a few ways that help undo the hex of the ex.
‘Complete’: Declare that chapter of your life over. Write a letter telling them to stay away. You don’t have to send it, but just writing it down makes it real.
Don’t Google: The internet makes it too easy to stay in touch with the person you should have left behind. Unfriend them. Resist the urge to search their name. Lose their email address.
Never compare: Face it, there will never be anyone quite like your ex. This is a good thing; you broke up, after all. There will also never be anyone like the new person in your life. Cherish them for who they are. It’s time to move on.
