While most girls go all out on prom night, few ever imagine they would get the chance to wear a gown last seen on the red carpet at the Academy Awards.
But Kayla Staskiewicz, from Waterford, Michigan, had just such an opportunity after her father entered her name into a WDIV-TV contest.
The 17-year-old won the chance to borrow the Versace couture dress worn by actress Christina Ricci to the Oscars in 1999.
Cinderella moment: Christina Ricci at the 1999 Oscars in her $25,000 Versace gown, and Kayla Staskiewicz in the same dress before her prom last week
The $25,000 pale grey gown, which is a size zero, was studded with thousands of tiny crystal beads in a criss-cross pattern.
Kayla told the Oakland Press that there was just one question when she learned she”d won: would it fit
She revealed that though ten other girls had tried on the figure-hugging dress, “none of them fit into it.”
But like Cinderella and her glass slipper, when Kayla was zipped into the Versace creation it fit perfectly.
She said: “I was just excited and ready to go to the prom right then and there.”
Kayla”s mother, Gayle Staskiewicz, explained why her husband, Mike, decided to enter the competition in the first place.
“He thought our daughter would look beautiful in that dress and with thesize being only a zero, he knew she would have a good chance to fit into it because she is very small,” she said.
Kayla, who plans to go to nursing school after graduation, added that the evening was a huge success.
“It was really hot outside but I felt really pretty,” she said. “My mom kept calling me Cinderella.”
