Staunch Democrat Diane von Furstenberg distances herself from Ann Romney after Republican wife steps out in her signature wrap dress

Diane von Furstenberg appears to be trying to distance herself from the Republicans after Ann Romney stepped out in one of her designs earlier this month.

The wife of Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney was seen in Florida on October 7th wearing a $345 dress by the designer, who is one of Barack Obama's most high-profile supporters.

When asked about the unlikely association by BuzzFeed Shift, the Diane von Furstenberg PR team revealed that, unlike many public figures, they had not loaned or given Mrs Romney the dress.

In a twist: Ann Romney was seen wearing a $345 current-season dress by Diane von Furstenberg in Florida on October 7th (right). However the designer's PRs are being careful not to promote the association

The label's reps, who normally issue press releases when famous figures are seen in its designs, told the site: 'We're actually not quite sure how Ann obtained the dress.'

Of course Mrs Romney, whose husband
has an estimated personal wealth of $250million, can buy as many Diane
von Furstenburg dresses as she desires.

She should perhaps stick to shopping online or in a department store though, as the designer is unlikely to welcome Mrs Romney into her store.

'No Republicans!' Ms von Furstenberg told guests at a store event that only Democrats were welcome

At a Fashion's Night Out event in
Manhattan last month, she announced to the crowd: 'Everyone here better
be a Democrat; no Republicans!'

She then instructed guests to hurry home and 'watch the President [on TV] at 10pm', when he would be giving his DNC speech.

Ms Von Furstenberg, whose designs are a favourite with the First Lady, has donated to the Obama campaign, and designed products for the Runway To Win fundraising initiative.

She has also attended a number of fundraisers, including a star-studded Hollywood event at the home of George Clooney.

Mrs Obama regularly wears pieces from the label, most recently when she took to the DNC podium for a sound check.

In that instance, the Diane von Furstenberg PR team were quick to promote the association, issuing a press release to media contacts within hours.
