Six marriages, dangerous lovers, stints in therapy – yet somehow barely a wrinkle between them!
The three renowned movie beauties, perched courtside at a basketball game in New Orleans this week, look as preternaturally youthful as a clutch of lemons preserved in vinegar.
Their matching shaggy manes of hair, tinted and tousled, could belong to a group of teenagers. And there isn’t a wrinkle between them, even though their combined ages add up to 151.
It is almost a reworking of the Renaissance painting ‘Springtime’ with its Three Graces — although some may suggest this has more to do with Botox than Botticelli.
Reunited: Brooke Shields, Daryl Hannah and Melanie Griffith were pictured courtside at a basketball game earlier this week, still looking as youthful as ever despite the interesting turns their lives have taken
The hands, however, with their veins, wrinkles and age spots on display — give the game away. Between them, they have notched up six marriages and three stints in rehab.
Add in an orgy and an oddball friendship with Michael Jackson, perhaps it’s no wonder they look a little weathered . . .
Long career: Brooke Shields has been in the public spotlight since she starred in an advert aged just 11 months old. She has just finished a stint playing Morticia in a stage production of the Addams Family
Years in showbiz: 45 — her first work was shooting a soap commercial when she was 11 months old. The American agent Eileen Ford started her children’s division specially for Brooke. When she was 12, she played a child prostitute in the controversial film Pretty Baby.
At 14 she was the youngest model to be on the cover of Vogue, and also shot the film The Blue Lagoon. That was also the year of her notorious Calvin Klein jeans adverts, which ran with the line: ‘You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins Nothing.’
Instantly recognisable, thanks to her beetle brows and glorious mane of hair, she’s now a mum of two who speaks out on the subject of post-natal depression, which she suffered after the birth of her first daughter.
There was a long slump after the romantic drama Endless Love — but she resurrected her acting career with a spell in Friends in 1996, followed by the sitcom Suddenly Susan. She has just finished a run as Morticia in a Broadway production of The Addams Family.
Romances: Her mother, Teri, coaxed her into a summer romance with John Travolta, then 27 and starring in the film Blow Out, when she was 16. She dated the actor Dean Cain when they were students at Princeton. She was also linked to John F. Kennedy Junior and Dodi Fayed, along with Liam Neeson — and went on dates with Michael Jackson in the early Nineties.
She was married to tennis player Andre Agassi, from 1997 to 1999. Agassi, five years her junior and several inches shorter, later admitted he knew it was a disaster but didn’t know how to get out of it.
Since 2001, she has been married to TV writer Chris Henchy. They have daughters Rowan, eight, and Grier, five, and live in New York.
Plastic surgery: She admits to having ‘tried’ Botox, but has said she didn’t like it and was instead considering laser treatments on her wrinkles. ‘I have to find someone with a light touch,’ she said in 2010. ‘I’m scared I’ll end up looking like The Joker.’
Breakdown: Shields was married to tennis star Andre Agassi from 1997 to 1999. He later admitted that he knew the relationship would end in disaster
Others think she has had a brow lift, a nose job and Botox. Dr Michael Salzhauer, a Miami plastic surgeon, commented: ‘Brooke Shields may say she doesn’t like Botox, but her forehead sure does. Also, I’m sure she has had a little plastic surgery to maintain her trademarked arched eyebrows.
‘A browlift or an upper eyelift are some ways that she may have maintained her youthful “look”. Her nose looks extremely straight and narrow. Make-up may have helped her achieve this look, but I am more inclined to say it was from an operation.’
Did you know: Franco Zeffirelli, who directed Shields in Endless Love, would stand off camera and squeeze her big toe until the pain made her look as if she was in the throes of sexual ecstasy for her close-ups.
She says: She feels younger than ever. ‘Growing up, I was always the kid, but was in adult roles. I always thought that when you get older, you’ll want to slow down, but I want to do even more.’
Don’t say: Anything bad about Jacko. The pair became pals after meeting at a party when she was 13 and he was 20. ‘To us, it was the most natural of friendships. Both of us needed to be adults very early, but when we were together, we were two little kids having fun.’
Making a Splash: Daryl Hannah's appearance in the 1984 film about a mermaid put her into the public consciousness before she later appeared in Wall Street
Years in showbiz: 30 — her first big role was in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. But who could forget her as a mermaid in Splash in 1984 ‘Half-woman, half-fish, and all babe,’ said the critics. More recently known for her devotion to ecological issues, she was arrested outside the White House last August after protesting against a planned oil pipeline.
Romances: A six-year relationship with the late JFK Junior. He broke her heart in 1994 by running off with his future bride, Caroline Bessette. Daryl’s also had flings with Dodi Fayed and Mick Jagger, and a long relationship with the singer Jackson Browne. It ended in 1992 after allegations of domestic abuse, which he denied. She is now seeing Rami Jaffee, a musician with the Foo Fighters, who is 43.
Plastic surgery: Nothing’s been done, she says. ‘I’ve got a little jowly, but I am too much of a coward to go under the knife for something that isn’t life-saving. There are so many people in LA who have had cosmetic surgery and they all look like Muppets,’ she once said.
Inevitably, given how good she looks for her age, people are bound to speculate. Among them is Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr Richard Fleming, who says: ‘Everything about her face used to be much thinner, cheeks, jaw-line, nasal labal lines — everything. In my opinion, there is filler material in there.’
Dr Adam Schaffner, a New York plastic surgeon, agrees: ‘I reckon she has had so much work done; her face is totally changed.’ He thinks she may also have had a nose job.
Campaigner: Hannah was arrested outside the White House last year for protesting against a planned oil pipeline and now devotes much of her time to ecological issues
Did you know: Teachers at Hannah’s school in Chicago wanted to institutionalise her as a child, thinking she was autistic. She says she was just shy. Now she lives in a wooden house in the Rocky Mountains and sells eco essentials such as soap beads and things made out of hemp.
She says: That she loves her farm life, keeping bees, horses and chickens and tending her rhubarb. ‘I’m at the edge of civilisation, and that’s just where I’m comfortable.’
Don’t say: That she’s loopy. ‘She’s chosen to say something about the planet and to say that time is running short. The idea that she’s a ding-a-ling detracts from the issues she’s raising,’ defends her uncle Haskell Wexler, a cinematographer.
Nominated: Melanie Griffith's career high was receiving an Oscar nod for her appearance in the 1988 film Working Girl
Years in showbiz: 53. The daughter of The Birds actress Tippi Hedren, Griffith filmed her first TV commercial at nine months old. She made her film debut aged 17 in The Drowning Pool and Night Moves, but had her breakthrough in Brian de Palma’s Body Double in 1984. Her career high was playing secretary Tess McGill in Working Girl in 1988, for which she earned an Oscar nomination.
Romances: At age 14, Griffith began dating actor Don Johnson, who was 22. They were married, stormily, for six months in 1976. Griffith then married actor Steven Bauer, and had son Alexander, now 26. They divorced in 1987.
She went to rehab for cocaine and alcohol in 1987, and then reunited with Johnson. They married for a second time in 1989, and had a daughter, Dakota, now 22, but divorced again after he fell off the wagon. In 1996 Melanie married Spanish heart-throb Antonio Banderas, and their daughter, Stella, is 15. She has had two further stints in rehab, in 2000 and 2009, latterly for addiction to painkillers following a neck injury.
Plastic surgery: Reports of a face-lift, followed by at least one eyelid lift and a nose job. She is also infamous for excessively plumped lips, although she has allowed them to settle a little and looks more natural than she used to.
Plastic surgeon Dr Anthony Youn said: ‘She seems to be letting some of her overdone plastic surgery fade. Her face, although smooth, looks less puffy. I suspect she’s had Botox and an upper eyelid lift.’
Did you know: Actress Tatum O’Neal claimed that she and Griffith once participated in an opium-fuelled orgy in a Paris hotel room, along with actress Maria Schneider and Marlon Brando.
Heart-throb: Melanie married Antonio Banderas in 1996. The couple have a 15-year-old daughter named Stella
She says: ‘This industry is terrible for women of a certain age . . . They don’t ask me to take my clothes off in movies any more! It’s so sad!’
Don’t say: She gets annoyed if anyone quotes Banderas saying he has ‘forbidden her from ever going to a cosmetic surgeon again’. In a previous interview, he called her ‘lust for beauty’ a terrible thing and implied they’d agreed no more surgery ‘for the sake’ of their marriage. She claims that he was misunderstood.
