'I felt sick, I still can't watch the final': Cowell blasts 'obnoxious' Will Young and says he wishes Gareth Gates had won Pop Idol
A decade may have passed since Pop Idol was on our screens, but Simon Cowell says he still can't watch the final footage.
The X Factor supremo has not held back in his scathing account of the showdown between Gareth Gates and Will Young in the 2002 talent series.
Speaking on ITV documentary The Talent Show, to be aired on Saturday night, he says: 'I still to this day can’t watch the final back because I was really
really disappointed. I really liked Gareth and wanted him to win.'
Don't hold back: Simon Cowell has admitted he still can't watch footage of Pop Idol as seeing Will Young win makes him feel sick
Cowell, currently on holiday in St Barts, lays into Will Young, who he calls 'obnoxious, full of himself.'
'I thought this will be interesting,' Simon recalls of meeting the contestant. 'You don’t like me, I don’t like you… and nothing has changed particularly.'
Gates, on the other hand, won Cowell over straight away. 'When he walked in I immediately hoped he could sing, he looked great… and then he couldn’t talk.'
Showdown: In a new ITV documentary The Talent Show, Cowell sounds off about his preference for runner-up Gareth Gates
Runner-up Gates, who also appears on the show, remembers: 'I just had a block, I thought it had wrecked my chance.'
Cowell says he 'felt sick' when young's name was read out during the live final. 'I remember feeling it in my stomach,' he says. 'I felt sick, that’s how much it effected me, it shouldn’t but it did.'
Ant and Dec admit that 'we all though it was going to be Gareth.'
The Talent Show airs on ITV1 this Saturday at 8.30pm
