If we had all the staff that Samantha Cameron can call on, most of us wouldn’t volunteer to heave some flat-pack boxes into our car.

So passers-by were somewhat baffled at the sight of the Prime Minister’s wife single-handedly loading up her boot after a shopping spree in Ikea.

Mrs Cameron was seen pushing two trolleys of budget flat-pack shelving units and boxes through the store and into the car park.

Asked by one what she had bought, Mrs Cameron laughed and replied: ‘Lots and lots of storage.’

Appearing unaccompanied at the store in Wembley, North-West London, the 40-year-old mother of three flitted about with her shopping list, crossing off things as she went. Her visit came as No 10 was forced to give a breakdown of the 64,000 refurbishment of the Camerons’ Downing Street flat, which included a luxury toilet and floating ceiling.

But last Tuesday she appeared to be taking her husband’s austerity drive to heart, as her purchases came to under 250.

At one point she struggled with the two enormous trolleys she was pushing, but declined an offer of help from another mother, saying: ‘It’s fine, thanks, I can cope.’

She then pushed her trolleys out to the car park, where a female driver was waiting in a black people carrier.

One shopper said: ‘She was trying to blend in and was enjoying being a normal person going shopping. It was impressive that the Prime Minister’s wife didn’t expect any special treatment.’

An Ikea spokesman said that the store was delighted by Mrs Cameron’s visit and joked: ‘Now it’s up to David to assemble the cabinet.’
