At 68-years-old you would expect Robert De Niro to be enjoying his twilight years after a glittering acting career.

However, the star of Taxi Driver decided to embark on an action packed holiday on the island of Bora Bora with his wife Grace Hightower and son Elliot.

The veteran actor took to the sea like a duck to water as he strapped on a life jacket and showed his family how to ride the waves as he raced around on a large jet ski, last week.

De Niro looked more like an action hero than a father-of-six but he handled the powerful jet ski with control and skill as he negotiated around the bay.

With temperatures hitting around 30 degrees Celsius, the silver haired star avoided getting sunburn and kept well covered in a white T-shirt and orange shorts.

He also wore a pair of sunglasses which were attached to a string just in case they came flying off as he zoomed across the water.

The Godfather 2 actor also treated a lucky little local girl a ride on his jet ski but kept the speed to a minimum so that she didn't fall off.

After playing around on his big boy toy, De Niro upgraded his ride to a huge speed boat which came complete with a small crew.

The vessel dwarfed his earlier ride and there was plenty of room for more people to enjoy the experience, but Grace, 56, and Elliot, 13, opted to stay in shallow water by the beach.

After a day of excitement on the crystal blue waters the family relaxed together by the sand and Robert was seen cooling off in the water still wearing his T-shirt.

He may have looked like a normal tourist on holiday with his family, but the superstar was kept satisfied by a personal chef who provided food fresh off a barbeque.

There was no sign of the newest member of the family daughter Helen Grace, however, at the beach.

Grace and Robert welcomed the little girl, who was born through a surrogate mother, three months ago and weighed in at 7 pounds, 2 ounces.

De Niro has four other children – daughter Drena, 40, and son Raphael, 35, with former wife Diahnne Abbott, as well as 16-year-old twin sons Julian and Aaron, born via surrogate with ex-girlfriend Toukie Smith.

The couple have been been married for almost 14 years but are rarely photographed together, choosing to keep their relationship out of the spotlight.

De Niro and Hightower met in 1987 and married ten years later.

He is a devoted father to all of his children and he once told the Mail how manages to keep them all happy.

He told the Daily Mail: 'One of the most important lessons I've learned in my years as a father is to keep the lines of communication open with my kids.'

'I have five of them, ranging in age from 14 to their 30s, by three mothers, so I guess you could call it a fractionalised family of sorts.'

'But I care deeply about all of them, and I have made a conscious effort to talk to and to listen to them.

'Sometimes it's hard to talk to kids, especially when they're teenagers. They're in their own world, and they don't look like they're even listening to you.'

'But that's the time when it's most important to find a way to talk to them – not to lecture them, but to tell them things I think are important for them to know.'

The jaunt to the French Polynesia island is a welcome break for the Being Flynn actor as he is currently working on three films simultaneously.

He is filming Killing Season, alongside John Travolta, and Hands of Stone, with Gael Garca Bernal and singer Usher Raymond.

Next week he will also be back in New York at the Tribeca Film Festival, which he founded in 2002, and will be fielding a football team at this year's proceedings.

Last year Orlando Bloom, Ethan Hawke and former tennis star John McEnroe all took part in the five-a-side tournament and De Niro will field a team alongside the crew of hit TV show Law & Order.
