The Duchess of Cambridge’s Diamond Jubilee outfits have been endlessly analysed — from the daring scarlet hat she wore on the flotilla to her well-worn nude LK Bennett heels.

Yet one subtle touch escaped notice,
until now. As she boarded the royal barge, the Spirit Of Chartwell, Kate
wore a tiny gold brooch of two dolphins pinned to her red Alexander
McQueen dress.

The pin was
a gift from the Royal Navy Submarine Service — and in wearing it Kate
proved what fashion insiders have known for a while: that the brooch is
back.

With retro ladylike fashion dominating the catwalks, it’s no wonder this classic accessory has been re-invented by designers including Marni, Lanvin and Oscar de la Renta, and can also be bought on the High Street.

So how does one wear one Forget simply pinning a brooch to your lapel or on your right or left breast — instead, try wearing one on the collar of a button-up shirt or pinned to a long string of beads to make a statement necklace.

They also look great pinned at the side of a wrap dress. Just don’t buy one that says your name.
