Oscar de la Renta has slammed celebrity fashion designers who launch collections with no formal training.

At the annual Couture Council Award ceremony the 80-year-old, who has dressed the likes of Hilary Clinton and most recently Ann Romney, addressed a 1,000-strong crowd as he accepted an award for Artistry.

During his acceptance speech he took the opportunity to hit back at film stars and sports players who see fashion as an easy way to re-launch their failing careers.

Supported by peers including Martha Stewart, Barbara Walters and Sarah Jessica Parker at the Lincoln Center, New York on Wednesday afternoon, de le Renta addressed the trend.

'Today, if you play tennis, you can be a really good designer or,
if you're an actress, you can be a designer.

'I've been at it for 45
years and I'm still learning my craft on a daily basis,' WWD reports.

Diane von Furstenberg, Vogue
editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and New York City Mayor Michael
Bloomberg were also present at the event, which raised more than $1 million for The Museum at FIT.

was focused on Michelle Obama and the dusty pink Tracy Reese dress she wore the
night before at the DNC.

Commenting on New York Fashion Week where he is due to show his spring / summer 2013 collection next Tuesday de la Renta said: 'This is what I call in the business `panic time.'

'If I tell you what
the collection is going to look like now I don't know. I will know once
the girls start walking the runway.'

Two seats to his fashion show were snapped up by von Furstenberg for $12,000 at a post-lunch auction.

After launching a children's clothing line this year, de la Renta also revealed that he has no plans on slowing down.

He added: 'Not now. Every single day
is a learning process. And I think that to be a good fashion designer,
it's not what I did. It's what I'm doing. You know, it's about now.'

FIT museum director Valerie Steele added: 'Oscar de la Renta is a true fashion
superstar who has long served as one of the greatest ambassadors of
American style.'

Past recipients of the Couture Council Awards include Valentino in 2011, Karl Lagerfeld in 2010 and Dries Van Noten in 2009.
