Earl Spencer has paid tribute to his late sister Princess Diana by naming his new daughter after her.

The Earl said he 'still misses his sister every day' and giving his seventh child her name was a fitting way to commemorate her.

The Earl's third wife, Karen Gordon, gave birth to Lady Charlotte Diana
Spencer last Monday at the family's ancestral pile in Althorp, Northamptonshire.

The delighted father said: ‘She’s adorable – another feisty little Spencer girl. We hadn’t settled on a first name before the birth, but Charlotte is a name we both loved, and it really suits her. We knew that as soon as we saw her. And, though it’s been 15 years since Diana died, I still miss her every day, and I very much wanted her commemorated in the naming of our daughter.’

Lady Charlotte Diana is another first cousin for Princes William and Harry and brings the number of children the Earl and Countess Spencer have between them to nine.

Earl Spencer has six children from two earlier marriages – to Victoria Lockwood and Caroline Freud – while the Countess has two daughters from her first marriage to Hollywood film producer Mark Gordon.

A former model, Countess Spencer, 39, now devotes her time to philanthropic work. After
her divorce in 2003 she set up the charity Whole Child through which she is said to
have met the 47-year-old Earl at a fundraising event.

Their daughter was born weighing 8lb 14oz in the family home of Althorp – where the couple also tied the knot last year. She is
the first Spencer baby to be born at the ancestral pile since 1793.

The Canadian-born Countess already has two daughters, aged 13 and 11, from her first marriage while the Earl has four daughters Kitty, 21, twins Eliza and Amelia, 20 and Lara, six, and two sons Louis, 18 – the heir to his reported 120m fortune – and Edmund, eight.

His new daughter Lady Charlotte Diana will now grow up in the stately house that was once the childhood home of her namesake.

The grounds are also now Princess Diana's final resting place as she was buried there following her death in 1997 on the insistence of Earl Spencer, who wanted his sister's grave to be well-looked after. The Earl has an open to the public exhibition of his sister's life and work at the house that raises money for the Princess Diana Memorial Fund.
