Once accused of being a shrinking violet, it seems that Nicola Roberts is on a mission to prove critics wrong.

Striving to emulate the success of Girls Aloud bandmate Cheryl Cole, the 25-year-old is pursuing a solo career and has designed a pair of jewelled wedges to mark the occasion.

Roberts has been working with rising designer Atalanta Weller, popular with the likes of Agyness Deyn and Rihanna on her own bespoke footwear.

Sporting chunky platforms and adorned with crystal droppers the shoes mark the launch of the singer”s debut solo single Beat of My Drum released on 5th June, with the album Cinderella”s Eyes following in the autumn.

The quirky design, sponsored by Swarovski Elements, compliments the image revamp that the red-headed beauty has undergone over the past year.

Atalanta Weller told Vogue: “After our first meeting I was excited by her ideas and collaborating with people who have a strong vision is really fantastic.

“Nicola considers everything she does really carefully and has a totally clear view of what she wants to achieve.”

Weller has collaborated with the UK”s top avant-garde designers including Gareth Pugh and Henry Holland

This year for the third consecutive the designer received The British Fashion Council New Gen award, supported by Topshop.

Weller added: “I think that she has incredible style and she”s extremely distinctive, luxurious and original in the way she wears clothes.

“I have not collaborated like this before and the fact that it was for the launch ofNicola”s solo music career meant we could be quite experimental. Everything was new and fresh.”

The Roberts designed platforms aren”t available to buy but there are similar styles inthe Atalanta Weller Collection which carries the strapline “the future is bold, feminine and sexy. Be comfortable with this and be comfortable with yourself”.

Since her rise to fame after winning her place in Girls Aloud in 2002, the singer has refined her style and recent reports said that she had blown 90,000 over the past year alone on her couture wardrobe, including outfits from Chanel and Vivienne Westwood.

However, she denied the reports and joked via her PR: “I”d have to sell my f***ing house to spend that much money.”

Nicola worked on her single, Beat of My Drum with producers Dimitri Tikovoi and Diplo, and the track is already tipped to be a huge hit, with music website PopJustice called it “Daphne & Celeste vs Major Lazer vs Girls Aloud”.

Cheryl Cole has been the most successful of the five-piece girl band, however 25-year-old Nadine Coyle”s debut solo album “Insatiable” completely bombed when it was released last year, not even making the UK Top 40.
