When he was announced as Chris Moyles' successor critics were dubious about whether party animal Nick Grimshaw would adjust to the early starts demanded for the coveted breakfast show slot.
Known for his penchant for late nights with his posse of celebrity pals, the Radio 1 Breakfast Show host would have to dramatically scale back his socialising. One might expect.
However Nick was spotted out partying with The Voice finalist Tyler James until 3am on Friday morning – just hours before he was due to be live on air.
No time for bed! The new Breakfast Show host headed to the Groucho with his celebrity pals, including The Voice's Tyler James
What early morning start Nick Grimshaw lived up to his partying name by staying out until 3am on Friday morning – just three hours before he was due on air on Radio 1
Clearly determined to still enjoy his social life, Grimshaw, 28, headed to party venue the Groucho with star pals Natalie Imbruglia, Lily Cole and former The Voice contestant Tyler James.
And he was obviously enjoying himself so much he didn't leave at a reasonable hour to prepare himself for his 6.30am start.
The 28-year-old was photographed leaving the venue in the early hours of the morning with a wide grin on his face despite knowing he barely had any time to squeeze in some sleep before checking in for work.
Good night then Grimshaw didn't seem to care that he would have to be live on air with in three and a half hours as he cuddled Tyler goodbye
Nick, who is affectionately known as Grimmers by his friends, wore a red and black striped jumper for the outing with Converse trainers and ripped jeans.
Clearly having had a good night with singer Tyler, the pair embraced in a big hug before finally going their separate ways.
But ever the professional, Grimshaw ensured he was sat at his microphone ready to entertain the nation, albeit complaining of how he was feeling.
And he was happy to let the listeners know just how late he'd got in as Dev, the presenter who hosts the show just before him, was already on air as he made his way home.
He commented: 'I mean, your life's not good is it if you're like, “Ooh night”, and Dev's on the air.
'But I think of all the nights you can get in late is Thursday because today's not a real live show because it's Friday.'
He then played his first song by Pendulum, only to jokingly remark afterwards: 'How long was that song! I nearly fell asleep during that.'
Although sounding surprisingly alert, he couldn't help but continue bemoan his state following his late night.
Late night: Grimmers refuses to let his early morning role get in the way of his social life
Star pals: Natalie Imbruglia and Miquita Oliver were among the star friends that Nick couldn't tear himself away from on Thursday night
Grimmers was also joined by former Popworld and T4 presenter Miquita Oliver inside the club, who was seen leaving holding hands with Australian pop star Imbruglia.
Jaime Winstone was also in tow as Nick let his hair down for his Thursday night outing.
Grimshaw is known for hitting the party scene with his other celebrity pals, which include Pixie Geldof, Jameela Jamil, Kate Moss and Lily Allen.
And when he was first told of his role, it was supermodel Moss who even advised him to continue doing what he does best.
Letting their hair down: Nick managed to sound alert as he got to his microphone on time, but did complain to listeners about how he was feeling
According to The Sun, Grimshaw said that the supermodel also urged him to not turn up some days.
'When I got the job, Kate said to me:
“What you wanna do , darling, is do what I do. Sometimes I go to work.
Sometimes I go to work hungover. Sometimes I don't turn up at all.
People love that. They don't know what to expect.”'
former T4 presenter then went on to say that he suggested to Moss that
that's what former Radio 1 breakfast host Chris Evans used to do.
Making their exits: Actress Jaime Winstone was also seen leaving as Grimshaw finally called it a night
said, “Kate, that's what Chris Evan's did.” She said: “Exactly darling,
everybody loved Chris Evans.” I said: “Kate, they sacked him.”'
He told the Guardian: 'Some of my
friends, they don't really work, it doesn't matter if they're hungover.
I'd go out, get p**sed and then go to work and be like, What am I doing
now I've cut down on the drinking and I feel more positive. I like
broadcasting and I love music. It's a fun job and it's a stupid job and
that's fine with me.'
Grimshaw debuted on the Breakfast Show on 24 September.
