Narciso Rodriguez, who routinely dresses A-list celebrities in show-stopping, colourful gowns for the red-carpet, has just joined forces with Kohl's.
Bringing his niche brand to a far broader audience, Mr Rodriguez is the first designer to participate in Kohl’s brand new, and ongoing collaboration programme, called Design Nation.
In a first look at the collection, on sale this November, the designer has brought his penchant for bold colour and minimalist tendencies to Kohl's, with luxurious-looking knits and sleek dresses inspired by Istanbul.
First look: Narciso Rodriguez is the first designer to participate in Kohl’s new collaboration programme, called Design Nation, with these pieces from the collection priced between $30 and $150
Giving the Macy’s and Target high-low collaborations a run for their money, Design Nation enables designers like Mr Rodriguez to travel to a city of their choice in search of inspiration for a month-long capsule collection.
The concept will result in pieces that not only reflect the designer's well-known DNA, but also the city's – with outerwear, tops, dresses, and knits priced between $30 to $150.
Mr Rodriguez, whose dresses are favoured by Michelle Obama, Jessica Alba, and Claire Danes, chose Istanbul as his city of inspiration.

Earlier this year he travelled to the city, exploring its wonders for four days. Together with Kohl’s executives, he visited museums, palaces, bazaars, and took a boat tour down the Bosphorus, according to WWD.
The designer said: 'It was a really interesting idea to travel somewhere you had never been
to before, and get your inspiration from a place that wouldn’t normally
be in your comfort zone, bring that back and turn it into a collection.
'I was completely inspired by the people, the city
and all the different cultures.'

As a designer who has always been compelled as much by the process of designing as the results, his inspired Kohl's collection is sure to exceed expectations.
For his latest resort 2013 collection, he built a season's worth of clothes from a single bulletin board lined with silk ribbon as inspiration, and his Kohl's collection appears to have be executed in the very same way.
He said: 'There is such a great mix of Europe and Asia [in Istanbul], and a really cool new scene, from the arts to the kids, the graffiti, the colors of the streets, the patinas on the walls, the tiles on the floors.'
And after he spent hours combing through rugs, the designer photographed a stack of them, turning those photos into abstract prints for the collection.
Man of the hour: Narciso Rodriguez already has a strong celebrity following, but his new Kohl's collection will enable him enter the mainstream
A designer who specialises in subtlety,
his Kohl's collaboration is said to be a 'more playful iteration' of his
usual clean lines and often sporty, but minimalist tendencies.
Mr Rodriguez said: 'I wanted to take what I do and merge it with something completely different.
'A designer’s mission is to dress as many people as possible. It’s always been something that I have looked to do – to reach and touch people’s lives with my work.'
Realising the extent of the new programme's reach, which will enable the designer to broaden his name recognition outside of high-fashion, he added: 'There is a broadened opportunity now, and every designer is looking to touch people’s lives in different ways.
'Whether it’s through fragrance, accessories, capsule collections, or secondary lines. They’re all very real parts of the business today.'
Giving Kohl's new designer programme even more weight, the next Design Nation collaborator on the roster is touted to be Derek Lam.
As the exciting news unfolds, it was recently announced that Target's own designer collaboration programme, Go International, which successfully created collections with emerging designers and put the retail-store on the fashion map, was recently discontinued.
Target quietly shuttered their Go International division, which brought lesser known designers like Richard Chai, Thakoon Panichgul, and Behnaz Sarfpour to the mega-chain and to the mainstream.
This is the first designer collaboration for Kohl's, which has previously stuck to celebrity collaborations, namely Loren Conrad and Jennifer Lopez.
