My, how you”ve grown! 13-year-old Malia Obama is now almost as tall as her father
The President may describe her as “my baby”, but 13-year-old Malia Obama is clearly growing up fast.
At a number of recent appearances at festive events, the teenager has cut an elegant figure, now standing almost as tall as her parents.
Malia, who was already 5ft 9in last year, seems to have had another growth spurt as she now matches her mother”s 5ft 11in.
Growing up fast: 13-year-old Malia Obama (second left) is now as tall as her First Lady mother, Michelle, and is fast catching up with the President in height
High hopes: Malia”s height was clear to see on a visit to a book store with her father and sister last month
If she continues to grow, it won”t be long before she catches up with her father, who is 6ft 1in tall.
But unlike many teens unused to their new height, Malia shows no trace of awkwardness or embarrassment.
Instead, she seems to have embraced it, with smart, yet bang-on-trend, wardrobe choices.
Clearly sharing the First Lady”s instinct for style, she favours favouring bold colours and statement prints.
Elegant: With her new height has come a confident sense of style. Malia teams occasion-appropriate shirts and dresses with coloured hosiery and bang-on-trend biker boots
Tall story: Malia aged ten with her father in March 2009 (left), the following year in August, aged 12 (centre) and in July this year, shortly after her 13th birthday (right)
And though she opts for occasion appropriate tailored coats and pussy-bow blouses for formal occasions, there is always a youthful element to each look, be it a thigh-skimming miniskirt or chunky biker boots.
Indeed, she wears her height so well, itseems little sister Sasha is desperate to catch up. Joining her sister and father to pardon the Thanksgiving turkey last month, the ten-year-old completedher look with metallic blue patent wedges.
Unrecognisable: Malia”s edgy, fashion-forward look today could not be further removed from the angelic ten-year-old we first met at the Presidential Inauguration in January 2009
But though Malia still wears braces, a visual reminder that she is still only at the start of her teenage years, she has started to embrace make-up- with her mother”s wise counsel to guide her, of course.
Daddy”s girl: Malia being pushed in a stroller by her father, who still describes her as “my baby”
In an appearance on The View, Mrs Obama revealed: “We do a lot of talking. Sometimes it”s too much.
“After our… military families tour, Icame in, it was 10.30 at night – we were beat, we did four cities in two days, and Malia”s like, “Ma, I need to talk to you.”
“And it was 10.30 and we talked. And we talked, and we talked. We talked about make-up, actually.”
In fact, it seems the only person struggling with Malia”s coming-of-age is the President himself.
He admitted in an interview last year: “Even though she”s 5ft 9in, she”s still my baby.
“And she just got braces, which is good, because she looks like a kid and she was getting … she”s starting to look too old for me.”
One occasion in particular, came as a shock, as his wife revealed on The View.
She said: “He says he”s cool, but youknow… The first time Malia went out for a party and she was dressed, she had her hair done and she”s tall, she had on a pretty dress, you could see him, he was sort of like… gulp. And I was like, “Easy dad.””
