'My big fat Gypsy rejection': Traveller and girlfriend have a child but live separate lives as she will 'never be accepted by his family'
Their relationship was doomed from a start.
And after seven years of dating, Martin Kelly's family still refuse to accept Kaylee Mulddon into their community – because she's not a gypsy.
As a result the couple, who are also parents to one-year-old Johnny, live completely separate lives.
The 23-year-old compares their scenario to that of Romeo and Juliet stating that like the Shakespearean characters, their 'different backgrounds kept us apart'.
Big dreams: Beauty queen Kaylee Mulddon hopes to marry her gypsy boyfriend one day, but his family don't approve despite the couple having a child together
Kaylee told The Mirror: 'I already knew a bit about travellers as there were a few sites where I lived.
'Nothing was going to change how I felt about Martin. After all, they were just his family. I couldn’t see the big deal. The most important thing was that we loved each other.'
Kaylee with baby Johnny lives in her own apartment while her boyfriend lives on a gypsy site
After getting pregnant at 21, Kaylee hoped, with a child on the way, that she and Martin would get married.
But Martin's family had other ideas.
She said: 'My mum and dad wanted us to be a family, to have a wedding. But Martin’s family were the exact opposite. He told me they would never accept us a married couple because I was not a traveller.'
But it's not just Martin's family driving them apart. They also have different lifestyle preferences.
Kaylee has no desire to live on a site, where Martin now lives with his family, and prefers to remain in her own apartment.
The beauty queen, who competes in pageants to take her mind off her situation, still hopes they couple will marry – and admits she is sometimes jealous when she watches the C4 show.
Kaylee was just 16 when she met Martin at a shopping centre near her home in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire.
A few weeks later, she discovered her new boyfriend was related to Paddy Doherty from
Big Fat Gypsy Weddings.
Despite being considered an outsider by her partner’s family, Kaylee respects their culture and has made some new friends.
Her biggest worry is that Martin will one day find a traveller girl that his family approves of.
She said: 'Because of the cultural divide, things between Martin and I are very
tough. I don’t know if I’ll ever convince him to get married and live
as a proper family.
“But that doesn’t mean I can’t have my own glamorous day – it’s just that mine is in a competition!'
