Like many women Scarlett O'Kelly was hit hard by the recession; she became jobless, hopeless and mired in debt.
But as a single mother of three facing financial meltdown, she did what many woman would find unthinkable: she decided to to sell herself by becoming an escort.
She says it was a recession-induced decision to fund her lifestyle when all other options failed, and her book Paying For It gives an insight in to life as an escort.
Scarlett would meet her clients in hotels, they were lonely, often married men
Scarlett is, of course, a pseudonym.
'The key to my success as an escort was discretion: the men required it, I demanded it, and my whole life is dependent on the thin veil of obscurity that separates escort from the real me,' she explains in the novel, which was released in Ireland earlier this year and is now being re-released in England.
Paying For it by Scarlett O'Kelly will reveal the candid truth of life as a call girl
It all boils down to money. After she lost her office job and her ex-husband's hours were slashed, neither parent could afford to pay maintenance bills.
Scarlett aimed for the upper end of the market and her introductory sessions demanded 400euros for 90 minutes and then 300euros for a 60-minute session which she advertised online.
Her clientele were of a high caliber, she purposefully sought out those who were risking as much as she was. They were lonely, often married or attached men who were isolated and in need.
And the strangest part She enjoyed it.
Both the sex and the secrecy were arousing for her, which she reveals in the explicit scenes of the novel.
But she maintains that she is just a regular mother providing for her family and that this is the only way she could put food on the table for her children.
am an ordinary mum getting on with life. I'm someone who you would
comfortably chat to at the school gates – perhaps you have – or in the
doctor's surgery or while queuing at the post office and you would
probably think I was a lovely lady.
'I am basically anyone who looks like
a well-groomed, attractive, educated woman hitting forty. How I pay my
mortgage, fund the children's hobbies and interests and put food on the
table may make me unusual, but I hope it doesn't change who I am.'
The ex-convent school girl who is university educated describes herself as 'well-groomed, attractive,
educated,' but stresses that she looks like 'any other woman my age.
I'm nearly 40, I've had three kids, I have stretch-marks, saggy boobs,
the whole lot, I'm not skinny, I have a fair bit of weight, I'm
roughly a size 16'.
Billie Piper played Belle de Jour in ITV's Secret Diary of a Call Girl
The fear of her identity being disclosed plagues her with worry, mainly for the sake of her children, especially after call girl Belle de Jour's identity was recently revealed.
'If it ever got out that I am in fact an experienced sex worker who has slept with more than one hundred men, my life here would be over.
'That's why this account of my secret life has been carefully constructed to give the truth, but in a veiled form.
'Everything in this book is real: my story, the stories of the men and the sex. It all happened.'
