Every celebrity knows that an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres show will involve a good deal of goofing around and a few unexpected surprises.
So when Michelle Obama video-chatted with Ellen from a live event today, she was amused to find herself competing with her over pictures the talk show host had unearthed of their embarrassing high school prom dresses.
The 300-strong audience of teenage girls screamed and laughed in delight as the two engaged in provocative banter via video-cam about Ellen's ugly checked frock and Mrs Obama's slinky gown.

The live-streamed conversation was just one highlight of a Joining Forces event in Florida, at which the First Lady addressed a room full of military daughters, and will be aired in full on the show today.
After reminding Mrs Obama of their push-up competition in an earlier episode, Ellen changed the subject bringing focus to a subject closer to the teenaged audience's heart.
High school wars: Ellen and Michelle Obama discuss push ups and prom dresses via videocam during a live event for Joining Forces at which the First Lady was speaking to 300 teenge girls
'Mrs Obama I don't think I've ever showed you my prom picture,' she said before displaying a hilarious snap of herself and her prom date.
In the photograph she wears a shapeless ankle-length dress with a diamond pattern. The frumpy, covered-up frock has a white collar and high-waisted belt to match.
'That was a table cloth at one point,' Ellen explained against the background of hysterical laughter and the chuckle of the studio audience in Burbank, California.
But the joke was far from
over and next up on the slideshow was a picture taken of American's
First Lady in the revealing, silky peach number, slit up the thigh, that
she wore to her prom in 1984.
Obama, then a student at Whitney M Young High School in Chicago,
laughed and admitted: 'That split was a little high, I don't know if I'd
let my kids go out in a split that high.'
Modern technology: The hilarious comparison of old-fashioned prom fashion will air on Ellen's show today
She's still got it: Ever the fashion maven, Mrs Obama looked ravishing in a bright red dress and pretty floral brooch
out the fun a little longer, Ellen zeroed in on the wicker chair on
which the already glamourous teenager perched in front of her date David
'Were you shopping at pier 1 or something' she asked.
But always one with a quick retort, Mrs Obama replied: 'You've never done the wicker chair shop'
For the teenagers at the Joining Forces event, Ellen had an even bigger surprise. Each girl received a $250 gift card to JC Penny so they could buy dresses for their own forthcoming proms.
