Team GB cyclists such as Laura Trott, left, and celebrity bike-riders including Agyness Deyn have led the way in getting more women back in the saddle in the UK
Currently, three times as many men as women cycle in the UK.
But in the wake of Team GB's triumphant fortnight in the London 2012 Olympic velodrome and road races, bicycle retailers including Halfords, Evans and Bobbin Bicycles have reported steep increases in enquiries and sales for women's models.
Celebrity bike-riders including Florence Welch, Agyness Deyn, Madonna, Paris Hilton and Kate Winslet have also led women back onto the saddle.
Double medal-winner Victoria Pendleton, 31, teamed up with Halfords earlier this year to design a range of three traditional-inspired women's bikes, and since her Olympic success they have been flying out of showrooms and onto roads.

Demand for the Pendleton Bikes has
increased month on month since launch in April, with the highest number
sold so far in the past four weeks.
When designing her own cycles Pendleton says she deliberately created a two-wheeler distinctly different from the super-spinners she pedals in the velodrome.
She said: 'I
wanted to help create a bike that you could just jump on to go down to
the shops or the park.
'I know that most women don't want to squeeze into
lycra before they get on a bike.'

Accessories are also seeing a steep
increase in sales, with vintage style wicker baskets to fit on the front
of Pendleton's cycles seeing an increased retail rate of over 55%.
There is also increased demand for safety gear.
Paul McClenaghan, Halfords Commercial
Director added: 'We would be delighted to work more with Victoria and
are looking to discuss future plans and get some ideas on the drawing
board in coming weeks.
'She certainly has the golden touch both in the velodrome and out of it and is inspiring more women to ride.
has captured the elegance of the traditional lines of a classic bike
and helped those looking for a more relaxed everyday style of cycling.'

FOR FRUGAL GIRLS
Barclay's Cycle Hire, 1 per day
rent-a-bikes – fondly known as 'Boris Bikes' after the city's mayor –
are a rather cumbersome, heavyweight affair, with limited gears to
ensure the capital isn't populated with boy racers speeding down
Tottenham Court Road knocking down tourists like bowling pins. Though
they do feel a little as if you're riding an elephant, they are useful
for getting from A to B and mean you won't have to cycle back to A later if you don't want to.
