As Tom Daley stepped up to the edge of the diving platform tonight, the roar of the spectators was deafening as they willed him to succeed in the 10m platform preliminaries.
It was not the best performance for the British star, 18, but he managed to get
through to tomorrow’s semi-final – the qualification has been his focus after missing out on a medal in
last week’s synchronised diving final.
Out of 31 divers, only 18 could succeed to the next stage and Daley came in at 15 – his fellow Team GB diver Pete Waterfield failed to qualify.

Daley's first dive scored just 73.8 and left him down in 17th place – only 18 divers out of 31 can go through.
He did manage to progress with points as the evening progressed but he was still not confident as he has been in the past.
He told the BBC: 'If I was going to have a bad competition today was the best to do it on.
'It was definitely the worst I've dived all year so I will have to turn it around in the semi-final.
'It's nerve-wracking because you don't know what is going to happen, in my last dive it was now or never and thankfully I made it.'
Daley had an extra incentive to
impress after singer Cheryl Cole tweeted him: 'Good luck @tomdaley1994 you've got this !! #teamGB'

It was a testing time for Daley as only 18 of the 31 competitors will go through to the next round
Daley’s close friend and fellow British diver Tonia Couch said the tragedy meant that it would be ‘really emotional’ if Daley succeeds, adding: ‘If he wins, after the year he’s had, it will be a really emotional moment for him. I’m sure he will cry – I’m sure I will cry too!’
She said the diver doesn’t really talk about his father’s death, adding: ‘But I think everything he’s been through has just made him all the more determined to do well.’

After his disappointment in the
synchronised event, Daley’s mother Debbie said: ‘I did not see him for
three hours after the competition, by which time he had regained his
composure and was his usual jovial self. But I know how much it hurt.’
But she said she had faith that he
could triumph in the individual event, saying: ‘I can’t wait to see our
boy climb that 10m board and fight for a medal.
‘He wants it for himself, for his
dad, for his team and for his country, and he’s thought of little else
since he opened the diving pool at the Aquatics Centre a year ago.’
China's Qiu Bo, who took Daley's world title 12 months ago, showed off his prowess in the competition qualifying in first place with 563.70 points.
