She wore size XXXL clothes, munched through 4,000 calories each day and tipped the scales at 22 stone.

But it was only when pensioners she cared for branded her 'two tonne Nessie' that 29-year-old Liz Barker realised she had to take drastic action.

In a desperate bid to shed weight the care worker from Ledbury, Herefordshire, joined a slimming club in just 18 months shed ten stone, dropping five dress sizes.

Ms Barker, who is barley recognisable as a svelte size 12, has been nominated Slimmer of the Year and is enjoying new-found romance with a man five years her junior.

She said: 'I got used to being called ‘fat
bitch’ and ‘chubby’ by people when I walked down the street but the
thing that really got to me was when an elderly man in the care home
turned round one day and jokingly called me a ‘two tonne Nessie’.

'He meant it light heartedly but it really hurt.'

But it wasn't just public opinion that promoted Ms Barker to make lifestyle changes as she found her weight was also affecting her health.

She added: 'My weight was having a real impact
on my ability to work, I was more disabled than some of the people I was
looking after because I couldn’t get up and I was wheezing constantly
and out of breath… even picking something up from the floor was difficult.

'I
went home and thought to myself ‘if someone who is 40 or 50 years older
than me is commenting on my health then I have to do something.’

Before joining a local Slimming World in April 2010 Ms Barker would consume a stomach-busting 4,000 calories each day, enjoying pizzas,
pies and chocolate washed down with litres of full fat coke.

But after taking classes she learned how to stick to a balanced diet and schedule in regular exercise sessions, swimming and running three times a week.

Revelling in a new sense of confidence she describes that she has a 'whole new outlook on life' and has even started dating a 24-year-old amateur footballer.

She added: “It was great to lose the
weight and it obviously improved my confidence so I started going out
more but didn’t have anything to wear.

She said: 'I am a completely different person with a whole new outlook on life.

'Before, my weight affected my mobility and I never used to go out.

“I have a boyfriend now and really enjoy shopping in clothes shops and trying on things that I could not try on before.

'My boyfriend plays football for the town and he’s really fit.

'I’ve had a great time since losing the weight – I still want to lose some more but my life is completely different.'
