Designer mustard is the latest dinner party must-have as traditional Colman’s or even fancy French wholegrain will no longer, er, cut the mustard.
Food historian Robin Weir has created a new condiments collection for the East India Company using black mustard seeds.
Their new Lapsang Souchong Mustard (which is made from the Chinese smoky flavoured tea) is ideal for barbecues or poached fish.

‘You can even eat it in a sandwich with butter,’ says Weir. ‘Or pep up a salad dressing.’
The collection also includes a fine Tewkesbury Mustard (with horseradish) and Bull Dog Mustard with added chilli. All cost 3.95 (theeastindia companyfinefood.com).
And now a restaurant in Newcastle has opened in honour of the condiment — called Mrs Mustard it focuses on British dishes all served with specially blended mustards, from mulled wine to apple and chutney.
