Another feather in her cap! Kate Winslet wears a black and white hair piece as the Queen awards her with a prestigious CBE

She has been lauded as the best English actress of her generation.
But when Oscar-winner Kate Winslet met the Queen yesterday, all the two women wanted to do was talk about their children.
Recounting the moment she received her CBE for services to drama, the 37-year-old star said: ‘It was such an honour to meet the Queen, it was my first time.
Proud: Kate looked very pleased as she posed with her CBE after the ceremony with the queen
She told me that she was delighted to
be presenting me with my award and then asked whether I liked my job. I
told her that I loved it but I love being a mum even more.
‘The Queen said ‘Yes, that’s the only
job which matters.’ What a genuinely lovely thing to say! And I couldn’t
agree with her more.’
Berkshire-born Miss Winslet was,
appropriately, accompanied to Buckingham Palace yesterday by her two
children Mia, 12, and eight-year-old Joe.
Award: Kate Winslet received a CBE for her services to drama on Wednesday
Mia is her daughter by her first
marriage to director Jim Threapleton, whom she met on a film set and wed
in 1998 – memorably celebrating the occasion with a meal of bangers and
mash – but amicably divorced three years later.
She went on to marry another even more
famous director, Sam Mendes, in 2003, with whom she had Joe, but the
couple announced their surprise separation in 2010.
It is believed that the actress also brought along her new love, the rather eccentrically named Ned Rocknroll.
Mr Rocknroll, 34, is the nephew of
tycoon Sir Richard Branson and changed his name from Abel Smith by deed
poll before he married his first wife, heiress Eliza Pearson, in an
open-air pagan ceremony led by a druid in 2009. The couple separated
after just 20 months.
Royalty: The Queen pinned the award on Kate while they discussed motherhood
Elated: Kate looked over the moon as she shook hands with the Queen who wore yellow for the occasion
He met new love Miss Winslet when the pair were both holidaying on Necker, Branson’s private Caribbean island, last year.
Although the actress was accompanied
by her then boyfriend, model Louis Dowler, the pair quickly became an
item. Just a few weeks ago a spokesman for Miss Winslet confirmed she
had moved back to the UK from New York to set up home with Mr Rocknroll
in a 2 million Sussex love nest.
Yesterday Miss Winslet, who has always
seen herself as something of a poster girl for ‘natural women’, looked
trim but refreshingly curvaceous in a stunning black Alexander McQueen
Stylish: Kate wore an outfit by Alexander McQueen and a hat by Natalie Ellner for Ellsewhere
Her feathery hat by milliner Natalie
Ellner for Ellsewhere( c ) was something of a bold choice, however – not
least because from the wrong angle, it appeared as if a magpie had
landed on her head.
Miss Ellner creates bespoke,
sculptural hats that can, she says, be used ‘as headwear, displayed as
artwork’ or even, bizarrely, ‘manipulated through puppetry’.
Miss Winslet made her film debut in
1994 in the critically-acclaimed Heavenly Creatures and became the
youngest actress to be nominated for six Academy Awards before finally
winning an Oscar for The Reader in 2008. She also famously starred in
Titanic in 1997, the biggest grossing film in history at the time.
Chic: Kate's dress was both smart and also showed off her famous figure
Talking about her career and latest
honour she told the Mail yesterday: ‘I enjoy every minute of my job but,
to be really honest with you, it does seem a little bit fatuous here. I
have just been watching all these amazing men and women being honoured
for literally laying their lives down on the line, so to be rewarded for
my services to drama doesn’t really have the same gravity, does it
‘That said, it is a real honour to be recognised
