Author Judy Blume has revealed that she is battling breast cancer, and quietly underwent a mastectomy in July.

The popular author, 74, who lives in Key West, Florida, announced the news via her blog today, in a post titled '!@#$% Happens'.

Mrs Blume reveals that she had planned on spending five weeks in
Italy over the summer, but was forced to cancel the trip after receiving
the devastating news.

The blog details the difficult time she and her partner, George Cooper, faced after learning the news.

It reads: 'We were supposed to leave for five weeks in Italy on July 29 – four of
those weeks would be spent at an artists' colony housed in a castle in
Umbria where I was hoping to finish my new book. A castle! Sound too
good to be true Uh huh.'

After visiting a radiologist on June 12 for a routine ultrasound, she underwent a core needle biopsy which confirmed cancer.

She noted that she has no family history of the disease, she has never smoked and regularly exercises.

Six weeks after receiving the news, Mrs Blume underwent a mastectomy on July 30, adding that she doesn't need chemotherapy as the 'surgery went well, one night in the hospital, very little pain.'

The author also discloses that 17 years ago, she had a hysterectomy after being diagnosed with cervical cancer but 'caught it just in time'.

Mrs Blume's books have sold over 80 million copies and have been translated into 31 languages.

She concludes: 'As I've told my friends who've also been treated for breast cancer, I've joined The Club – not one I wanted to join or even thought I would ever be joining – but here I am.'

You There God It's Me, Margaret, Iggie's House and Blubber, and a film
version of her 1981 novel Tiger Eyes, directed by her son Lawrence is currently
in production.

She married John Blume, who she met while studying at New York University, but after having two children Randy and Lawrence the couple separated.

She married again in 1967 to a physicist named Thomas A. Kitchens but they divorced two years later. She is now married to non-fiction writer George Cooper.
