Cheers, sweetie! Joanna Lumley's Ab Fab wardrobe fetches 15,000 as she auctions off flamboyant
clothes worn in Absolutely Fabulous and The Avengers for charity

Joanna Lumley has put her wardrobe under the hammer, raising an absolutely fabulous total of 15,000 for charity in London.
The actress, 66, offered bidders the chance to own a piece of showbiz history, auctioning off some of her most famous outfits in aid of the Prince's Trust.
Garments worn by the actress in her
most memorable roles – including Patsy in the BBC comedy series
Absolutely Fabulous, and crime fighter Purdey in The New Avengers – were
snapped up at the even last night, often for much higher than expected.

Lumley, 66, said she only considered selling items which were special to
her, including her entire personal collection of Ab Fab clothing.
She said: 'I am giving up some of my greatest treasures and happiest memories. I am so thrilled to think that the proceeds will all go to
benefit young people through one of my all-time favourite charities, the
Prince's Trust. I love each item and each garment with a passion.'

Some 50 items went under the hammer at Kerry Taylor Auctions in central London on Tuesday night.
A Joseph zebra print coat worn by Lumley in the opening credits to
Absolutely Fabulous fetched 850, far exceeding the estimate of
200 to 300.
A range of underwear and corsets from her role as Purdey in The New
Avengers sold for 380, while a black velvet hat worn by Lumley in
Absolutely Fabulous raised 700.
A Chanel suit worn by her during her high-profile Gurkha Justice campaign sold for 750.

The biggest sale was an album cover owned by Lumley which was signed by
screen stars Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor from their 1963 film
The V.I.Ps. It was bought for 1,300.
Kerry Taylor, who hosted the auction, said: 'It was very special because
Joanna was up on the stage with me for the auction. She told a story
with each piece.
'People who attended didn't just get an auction, they
got a performance. She even finished by saying “Cheers, sweeties”, in
true Patsy style. She's an incredible woman.'

Joanna revealed to
Liz Jones, who was given a sneak peak at the lots for You magazine last
month, how she came to keep the designer outfits from TV shows that
would usually remain the property of the production company.

'I was offered the chance to buy them from the designers at 50 per cent off! So I snapped up the ones I loved,' she said.
She added that it was time to share the items she has accrued from her decades in show business.
'As first a model, now an actress, I'm always taking stuff off and putting stuff on. If you're as old as I am, you’ve seen it all before. You've done it all, 30 or 40 years ago.' she said. 'So that's why I'm selling all these clothes and bits and pieces, the Herms scarves and the platform shoes.

'I've got a tallboy at home which is four drawers full of neatly folded gorgeous bits of cloth. I thought to myself, “Don’t be selfish. If I die soon, my son and his wife will have to sieve through all this stuff. And I won't die till I'm 100 anyway, and by then my grandchildren's friends won't know who I am. What's the point Do it now.” '
