Forget celebrity fashion lines – Jessica Alba is channeling her creative instincts into designing eco-friendly diapers
She is best known for her acting skills – and for looking good while flaunting them.
But now Jessica Alba is turning her hand to the unlikely world of diapers, creating and selling a line of eco-friendly household products that are far from the usual A-lister's sideline of fashion or perfume.
The 30-year-old star's new Honest Co range, launched last week, includes cleaning products, baby skin care, bath products and, of course, diapers.
Mom knows best: Jessica Alba was unhappy with 'safe' products on the market, so created her own. Honest Co range includes baby skincare and bath products
Speaking with the New York Daily News, the mother-of-two said she had an 'a-ha moment' for the new venture when she had an allergic reaction to a baby-safe detergent.
It turned out that the brand, like most products on supermarket shelves, was full of chemicals.
Tapping into her love for children – she has two girls with Cash Warren – and a new-found spirit of adventure, Honest Co is all about biodegradable, safe and affordable products that also look good, she said.
'I’m like, just because it’s eco why does it have to be brown, beige, or have a green leaf on it' she said.
Look as good as they feel: The mother-of-two wants to change the image and price of eco products and has given diapers a fashionable makeover
It's good, honest! Packaging is fittingly bright and the line of diapers is emblazoned with ice-cream cones, skull-and-crossbones, anchors and pink stars
As such, packaging is fittingly bright and the line of diapers is emblazoned with ice-cream cones, skull-and-crossbones, anchors and pink stars.
But she is also on a mission to change the usually high prices that go hand-in-hand with being green and chemically-conscious.
She said: 'I would talk to my brother
– he has two kids – and I talk to my sister-in-law and my cousins,
they’re like, “Well, we can’t afford that.” Then I was like, “How in the
world is a safer and healthier product only available to those in a
higher tax bracket” That was my big a-ha moment!'
Trendy undies: The skull designs, left, are a 'homage' to Alexander McQueen
The resulting line has kept the Spy Kids 4 star in the office, manning phones. She told the Daily News that she has even been giving baby advice to moms who contact the company.
'I’m in the office, totally. If they have a question about parenting or if they’re like, “My baby’s doing this or that,” I can help in any way I can … It’s nice talking to other parents.'
As much of a mom as she may be, there is a streak of celebrity-charged fashion-awareness in the Honest line, which has seen unglamorous diapers being given something of a style makeover.
She said the skull-and-crossbones patterned diapers are an 'homage' to late British fashion designer, Alexander McQueen.
