Trapped: Jennifer Lopez admits that her Sweetface fashion line is one of her biggest career disappointments
Her Sweetface fashion line was launched with huge fanfare in 2001. But Jennifer Lopez now admits that her foray into design is one of her biggest disappointments.
In an interview published today, the American Idol judge, 41, said that she didn”t understand the business well enough when she joined forces with Tommy Hilfiger”s brother Andy.
She said the closure of the line, which was slammed at the time for being “overpriced and cheaply made” was “sad”.
She told the New York Times: “I just felt like I never got a fair chance to do itright. And on top of it, I felt like I was trapped in a situation I couldn”t get out of, and my name was stamped on things that I didn”t believe in.”
She admitted that she didn”t have enough creative control, and didn”t understand how to translate her own style into a retail offering.
It is a bold admission given that the star and her husband, Marc Anthony, are to launch a new fashion collection next season – this time in collaboration with Kohls.
This time Tommy Hilfiger is a partner in the deal, which will see the couple develop a “lifestyle brand”.
He explained: “Thedifference this time around is that Jennifer is fully engaged with a company that is professionally staffed to really develop anything she wants, from towels to knee-high suede boots.
“Literally, her wish is their command.”
The interview also sees Ms Lopez admit some failure in her acting career.
She said: “I don’t know anyone who bats a thousand in the movie business. I’ve made some great movies, and I’ve made some not-so-great movies.”
“Would I have wanted more opportunities to work on even greater films, consistently Sure. Everyone wants to work on the great movie and have the great role and get nominated for an Oscar every time. Life is not like that.”
Failure: Ms Lopez launching J.LO by Jennifer Lopez from the Sweetface fashion company she launched with Andy Hilfiger in 2001
And she told how she manages a career with three-year-old twins Max and Emme, revealing that she has no nanny so family members take turns babysitting.
“I know how to say no now,” she said. “Isay: “I’m tired. I can’t do this. I’m not doing that tomorrow.” I have kids now, so my life is not completely my own. They come first.”
She”s not exactly everywoman though, as her manager, Benny Medina, reveals.
He said: “This is the woman who lays out three outfits for her kids and her husband every day before she leaves. Every day! She may not be there for breakfast, but by the time she leaves, they all have three different outfits.”
