'I know they aren't going to call. I don't want them to call': How women who want no-strings-attached sex are fuelling boom in gigolo services

A handsome, muscle-bound man who is charming, witty and keen to treat a woman like an angel whenever she is in the mood

It may sound too good to be true. Until, that is, money is thrown into the equation.

Gigolos are on the rise in the U.S., says ABC's Nightline, with more and more well-educated, successful and high-earning women willing to shell out thousands of dollars for dates – and sex – with the 'perfect' man.

With services paid for up front and under the strict guise of simply charging for time, rather than sex, the practice is 100 per cent legal – straight male escorts bill for their hours and nothing more. If that leads to sex with a female client, so be it.

Heather Smith, a successful manager at a Fortune 500 company, told Nightline that she is only too happy for a date to end in the bedroom.

She has slept with five of the male
escorts from Cowboys 4 Angels, the gigolo agency that stars in
Showtime's reality show, Gigolos.

Models turned cowboys: Shawn, left, and Vin, right, both work as gigolos, taking wealthy women on dates. They take home 80 per cent of their $250 hourly rate

Not
only does she use the strapping men as a form of therapy to help her
move on from the pain of a series of failed fertility treatments and a
miscarriage, but she uses their pleasurable services as an incentive to
lose wight – and books a Cowboy every time she sheds five pounds.

She says that since she started heading on dates with the former models, including Vin Armani, she has gone from a size 28 to an 18.

For
her, though, the icing on the cake is that she is in control, and free
to do as she pleases. 'I know they aren't going to call. I don't want
them to call,' she told Nightline.

'I
definitely don't want somebody telling me what I should be doing with
my money, or my time, or anything like that,' she said. 'I know that
whatever I say is what I say and they either like it or they don't, I
don't care, and there's a freedom there. There's a liberty in just being
whoever you are and knowing it doesn't matter.'

She is certainly not alone, and, for
whatever reasons women may have, business is booming says the agency's
owner, former gigolo, 36-year-old Garren James.

He
told ABC that he has had over 2,000 job applications since the TV show
went to air. He now has 35 men on his books, spread across Texas, New
York, California, Georgia and Nevada.

While
each escort 'should look like a model-type guy' and be 'educated,
humorous, intelligent and a gentleman,' he said, his clientele tend to
be in their 20s, 30s and 40s and are 'successful in business, college
educated…and travel a lot.'

'He's amazing': Kelly, one of Shawn's regulars, is a very happy customer. She says she is too busy to find a boyfriend and likes a 'sure thing'

Vin even lives with his girlfriend and most have other jobs alongside their escorting.

Unsurprisingly, some question the
morals of escorting services – for and by whichever sex – but he
underlines the laws that make his company above board: 'It's not illegal
to charge somebody for your time, and that's basically what we're
doing. We're charging somebody for somebody's time.'

Shawn
is one such 'somebody.' Having got through the four part interview
process and background checks, the show sees him meeting a regular
client in Las Vegas – Kelly, a pretty brunette who is in Sin City on
business.

Baby lotion: Shawn told Nightline that he meets women who are 'just out of a bad relationship, bad divorce, sometimes it's their birthday, sometimes they just have too much money'

She pays $1,000 for four hours with
the nipple-pierced former model. He says that he looks forward to and
enjoys his dates with Kelly – although there are no emotional strings
attached.

She explained that she is too busy to find a boyfriend and likes a 'sure thing'.

Shawn discretely told the programme that their date ended with a 'good massage.'

Sex on call: Business is booming for Cowboys 4 Angels agency, as women increasingly turn to gigolos for sex and affection

'I'm
just being a gentleman,' he said, 'and what happens in Vegas… I'm
in Vegas so I have to stay in Vegas – and so do our stories and our
secrets.'

While Kelly said that she find
his services 'amazing' it is, after all, just business to Shawn, who
takes home a hefty 80 per cent of the fee – $800 in just one evening, in
this case.

He
told Nightline that he sees all sorts of wealthy women in his line of
work. 'Sometimes they are just lonely… Sometimes they just need to
feel like somebody cares about them. Sometimes they're just out of a bad
relationship, bad divorce, sometimes it's their birthday, sometimes
they just have too much money and want to blow it.'

While the gigolos are not required to take STD tests as they are officially not being paid for sex, they all told the programme that they practice safe sex.

And, as far as Mr James is concerned, there is no moral distinction between men paying for female escorts and his version of 'pimping.'

'I don't see how it's much different in the fact that just because a woman is paying now, that it's wrong. It doesn't make sense.'

Larger numbers of women, it seems, agree with him. As a satisfied Ms Jones said: 'This works perfect for me.'
