It's not something that anyone would expect our quintessential English gentleman to ever take part in.
But Stephen Fry yesterday showed that there is a stunt man inside him just itching to break free when he took part in a bungee jump.
And not any old bungee jump but one from where they first took place in Queenstown, New Zealand.
Scroll down to see his jump…
What have I let myself in for An apprehensive Stephen Fry peers down at the 43m drop as the team get prepared for his bungee jump
Fry, 54, swallowed his fear and absolute terror when he leaped off the Kawarau Bridge and fell 43 metres by his feet towards the river below before snapping back up on his cord.
There was a yellow dinghy with a couple of crew waiting for the TV host as he plummeted back down again and bounced on the cord for several moments.
Having second thoughts Stephen looks like he was grabbing on for dear life as he looked down at the river below
Are you ready Stephen gets ready to take the plunge
And afterwards, a jubilant Fry took to his Twitter page and posted a video of his jump in which he looked absolutely terrified.
And he wrote: 'That’s me that is, bungy-jumping. All man. Hencher than hench, butcher than butch. Lean in & smell the testosterone.'
Here we go! Stephen leaps into the air from the podium with his arms outstretched…
… and stays like that as he plummets…
… before another camera angle shows him falling face first
So delighted and fearless was he after his first jump that he went again, this time strapped in between two women.
he wrote: 'I did it again straight away. With 2 Welsh girls who work
there at the bridge. A Welsh rarebit sandwich…might post that vid.'
Weeeeeeeeeeee! Stephen swings back and forth from the Kawarau Bridge
What a view! Stephen bounces above the rushing water of the Kawarau River
He did indeed post the video and added: 'If you want to see terror, triumph, garnet outerwear and elastic http://fry.am/GThxzw or on YouTube.'
Fry is currently in New Zealand filming scenes for his role as the Master of Lake-town in Peter Jackson's prequel to Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit.
And he told Digital Spy that the director has made him go to great lengths to get into character.
Hello, are you waiting for me Stephen dangles above a dinghy which was watching his jump
He said: 'My character is an opportunity for sheer grossness. [Jackson] had me eating testicles.
'I mustn't give too much away but I've got a bald cap and then on top of that a really bad combover wig and this wispy moustache and wispy beard and horrible blotchy skin and disgusting fingernails.'
