Hundreds queue overnight as Topshop opens first store in Australia
Topshop opened its first Australian outlet today on Melbourne”s trendy Chapel Street in South Yarra.
More than 250 people waited outside the 1,300 square metre shop overnight. The first 20 to join the queue were each given an AU$100 (65) voucher to spend in the store.
This Topshop franchise is the first of 11 planned across the country. It follows Zara”s first Australian opening in April this year.

Topshop has about 750 stores across 32 countries.
Harlene Del Rosairo, 21, was one of the first to join the queue outside the store at 6pm last night. She came armed with a blanket, a book and a bottle of water.

Eighteen year olds Mathilda Field and JoBurkomanovic, arrived with their sleeping bags at 11.30pm. But they only realised a few hours into their impromptu pavement camp that they were going to miss out on the AU$100 vouchers.
They were placed 21st and 22nd in the queue.
They didn”t let this dampen their spirits, though.

“It”s been fun and it”s worth it,” Mathilda told Australian newspaper The Age.
Another queuer, Angelique Athanasiou, used to shop at Topshop when she was a student in London. She was also one of the first to line up outside Zara when it opened up in Melbourne this year.
“I adore Topshop, I am literally in awe of the store,” she said.

Analysts say that while some recently introduced fashion brands have performed strongly, such as Spain”s Zara, others have struggled, including The Gap.
Other international brands considering entering the Australian market include H&M, Uniqlo, J. Crew, Abercrombie & Fitch, Banana Republic and Forever 21.
They will be keeping a close eye on how Topshop fares Down Under.
