First seen on the catwalks of Yves Saint Laurent, Vivienne Westwood, Versace and Chanel, the look is now appearing on the High Street.

The dramatic look is a hit with celebrities — Jennifer Lopez, Sienna Miller, Rihanna and Sarah Jessica Parker have all been seen in feathery dresses, as have The X Factor presenters Kelly Rowland and Tulisa.

Beware: Feathers fluff out, which can make you look wider.Less is more — stick to just one feathery item, such as a statement necklace or clutch bag.Toughen up frou- frou feathers with denim or leather.
