How to steal Cindy Crawford”s tribal style
On trend: Cindy Crawford
The High Street has been on the receiving end of accusations of misrepresenting the Navajo style.
Sasha Houston Brown, a Native American, wrote a fuming open letter to Urban Oufitters, appalled at their Navajo range of plastic dreamcatchers wrapped in fake leather, hip flasks and patterned underwear.
While the collection may have put noses out of joint, there are some places who have tastefully and carefully emulated the traditional bold geometric style of the tribe.
Isabel Marant, Proenza Schouler and Anna Sui took inspiration from traditional Navajo attire with collections celebrating rich reds, blacks, indigos, white and vibrant oranges alongside woven, heavy fabrics, fringing and feathers.
Cindy Crawford was recently spotted wearing a horizontally striped Graham & Spencer poncho in a subtle nod to the trend.
These bold prints work best alongsidecolour blocked separates, denim and bright silver jewellery (something the Navajos also specialised in).
