Much-loved kitchen staples such as lard, black pudding and brawn have been ditched for low-fat alternatives, a study suggests.
Experts who compared how the contents of fridges have changed over the past 20 years, found that once popular ingredients are now off the menu.
Instead health-conscious consumers are more likely to opt for mineral water, olives and hummus as they strive keep their bodies in shape.
Experts found that nowadays Brits are more likely to stock their fridge with health foods instead of fatty ingredients which were popular 20 years ago
Even our milk has changed with many Brits replacing full fat with semi skinned or skimmed varieties.
Only cheese has survived the test of time, remaining the most common food item to be found in UK households.
One in five of the 2,000 adults surveyed said that they opt for quality over price when it come to food shopping.
And reflecting this results showed that Brits now spend an average of 37.83 on fridge items
each week – up from the 20.58 that was spent 20 years ago.
Commenting on the findings a spokesperson for Cathedral City cheddar, which commissioned the study, said: 'It’s
amazing to see how people’s tastes have changed over the years.
'Gone are the days when our fridges contained basic and easy to cook foods.
'Instead they have been replaced with healthy, organic alternatives … and the odd ready-meal.
'It seems our fridges have really changed over the years, but cheese has remained a constant throughout.'
While most said they chose products to benefit their own health, almost one quarter revealed that they bought health foods or organic produce to impress others.
