What's not to love about plimsolls They're machine washable, comfortable, long lasting (if bought wisely) and great for sudden bursts of speed.

Alexa Chung has made them super-cool again by posing for Italian trainer brand Superga's spring/summer campaign.

This month, too, sees all-American label Vans collaborate with Parisian fashion house Kenzo for some bright and breezy patterned sneakers.

As usual, the High Street has been quick to cotton-on. How heavenly that, for once, it's cool to be comfy.

1830

The year the plimsoll was first developed as beachwear by the Liverpool Rubber Company. It was initially called the ‘sand shoe’.

HOW TO WEAR

While tights are just viable on a cold day, these shoes suit a bare leg best, and baggy socks are a no-no.

When the sun is shining, pretty pastels, gingham, spots and stripes all look fresh and nicely nautical.

Avoid black, which can look dull and plump instead for a classic white tread.
