Any woman would be honoured to hold the title, so when Gwyneth Paltrow was named as the World’s Best Dressed Woman in People magazine this week, she no doubt sent her stylist a huge bunch of flowers.
With stiff competition from the eternally elegant Duchess of Cambridge – who had to settle for second place in the American celebrity magazine’s annual list – the actress, singer and lifestyle guru topped the chart, as voted for by 42 million readers.
However, style-watchers on this side of the pond have been left wondering if Elizabeth Saltzman – the former fashion director at Vanity Fair who is now Gwyneth’s personal stylist – is having the last laugh, having hoodwinked the world into believing a range of unflattering, gimmicky ensembles look good.
Gwynnie, after all, is blessed with a girl-next-door grin, sun-kissed skin, immaculate golden locks and a body honed to within a millimetre of perfection. Yet she still manages to get it consistently wrong…

A metallic tux looks edgy but hot pants make her thighs look chunky and her stiletto shoe-boots are ugly
This dress is too short to be sophisticated and square-toed shoes are more street-walker than Oscar-winner
This Vivienne Westwood bustier dress gives her cleavage but the pale satin looks crumpled, rather than artfully draped
A jacket and floor-sweeping skirt is usually reliable but this looks like a last-minute wardrobe rummage
This ill-fitting bodice made Gwynnie look pre-pubescent dressing up in her mother's clothes
Gwyn looks as if she's been basted and wrapped in foil in this Victoria Beckham mini-dress
If Julie Andrews in The Sound Of Music had curtains and a sewing machine, this would be the result
White stretch sheath with sheer black lace reveals unsightly underwear and shoes look cheap
This badly fitting strapless Stella McCartney number proves that even beautiful bodies sculpted to perfection by hard work can look dreadful in an unflattering dress
Here's the perfect example of 'lamb dressed as mutton' in this vintage Yves St Laurent dress
This looks as if her children have attacked her mini-dress with scissors, glue and glitter
Slashed to the thigh and cut away on one side, there are too many elements
