Sit-ups pose a problem. It takes just ten of them before your neck aches, so we give up before we’re anywhere close to a flat belly.

But a new piece of equipment promises to make crunches easier, more effective and, whisper it, even enjoyable.

Developed by fitness trainer Joanna Kabbani, the AB-MXR, pictured, is designed to support the neck, so your sit ups really target your spare tyre. It’s also ideal for rehabilitation. According to Joanna, you only need to use it for five minutes a day.

Sceptical, I joined her for a workout. The contraption is weighted (up to 3kg), with small handles, and it’s moulded to cushion your head and neck.

It has been tested by chiropractor Dr Mikael Porath Petersen from Optimal Spine Clinic, who explains: ‘It helps you do symmetrical exercises effectively and safely.’

Straight off I managed 15 sit-ups without any of my usual straining — I felt balanced and in control.

I took the 1kg model home to trial. It was easy to move about the house and, despite being a whiplash sufferer, I was given the confidence that I was working out correctly. It’s a brilliant piece of kit — although I might need more than five minutes with it before I’m bikini ready…
