Fashion”s favourite nonagenarian hits the big time as MAC launches Iris Apfel-designed new range of make-up
Her style has inspired books, jewellery ranges, museum exhibitions and many a student”s embarkation on a career in fashion.
At the tender age of 90, Iris Apfel is now taking on the world of make-up, delivering her inimitable eccentricity to the fashion-driven – and far younger – crowd who usually shop at MAC.
The range proves, yet again, that thewonderfully outspoken nonagenarian is beyond compartmentalising – falling far outside the usual fashions associated with those old enough to be great grand-mothers.
Rare bird: New Yorker and outspoken fashionista Iris Apfel, 90, has teamed up with MAC to launch a new range of make-up, on sale from January 5
The silver-haired clothes horse and lover of saucer-shaped glasses, a New York native, has always had a streak for the unorthodox.
Naturally, the new line is full of bombastically bright lipsticks, attention-grabbing nail lacquers and unambiguous hues of eye-shadow.
MAC says the range is “a colour collection inspired by a rare bird who has always been ahead of her time.”
In the past, Ms Apfel has admitted feeling out of step with her time, telling the Telegraph earlier this year that she “lives in the Dark Ages, the 17th century.”
Spectacular spectacles: The colourful, bright and unashamedly attention-seeking range keeps with the style maven”s eccentric fashion tastes
Perhaps at odds with many of her peers” tastes, the palette she has chosen for the line is as contemporary as ever, with a hot pink lipstick that would not look out of place on another of the make-up company”s fans, Nicki Minaj.
Gemstone-like green, shocking pink and scarlet sit alongside no holes-barred dark grey, blue and orange.
Taking a lead from the textile maven”s 2005 Rara Avis (Rare Bird) exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the 20-piece line, on sale at MAC stores from January 5, is mostly named after birds.
Toco Toucan features with Pink Pigeon, Diamond Dove and Scarlet Ibis. Prices range from $14 to $23.

Ms Apfel told the Telegraph that she believes young people are wanting in the style department: “Most of the young people today look dreadful. And celebrities look even worse,” she said.
We wonder whether the avian-inspired make-up may play its own small part in changing that.
In the meantime, a new collection made especially for the more mainstream 60s-plus age-group has launched at fabulousat60.com. The Fabulous line, vastly different to Ms Apfel”s designs, features muted natural shades.
