EXCLUSIVE: Official X Factor make-up artist reveals how to get the Rylan look (clue: it involves eyeliner, gloss, shimmer, mousse, wax, spray and a vat of chocolate fake tan)

It is just a few weeks in to the live finals but high maintenance wannabe Rylan Clark is already instantly recognisable to X factor fans, in fact he is better known for his slicked-back hair, perfect eyebrows and his deep perma-tan than his singing.
And now, in a MailOnline exclusive, the make-up team behind the 23-year-old 's on stage look has revealed how to get the singer's showstopping look.
Unsurprisingly it involves a LOT of hard work, including lashings of eyeliner, lip-gloss on the eyelids, gels, wax and mousse and vats of deep chocolate fake tan.
Looking this shiny takes lots of time and plenty of hands, so it's lucky that Rylan Clark has the help of X Factor's chief make-up artist
Ryan Clark, seen here performing on X Factor, has a gruelling beauty regime that involves huge amounts of fake tan and eyeliner
Clark, who admitted recently that he was mocked at school for being 'gay, fat, pasty and ginger', isn't naturally so glossy.
The singer has a gruelling daily beauty routine which involves being exfoliated, moisturised, plumped, pruned and pencilled.
And it is the responsibility of Julia Carta, Chief Make-up Artist on the show to give Rylan – who is mentored by Nicole Scherzinger in the Boys category – his super-glossy look.
Carta also looks after the hallowed face of Mr Simon Cowell, so she knows what she's doing when it comes to skin.
She gave FEMAIL her tips for preparing, conditioning, fake tanning and moisturising, as well as pointers at getting the 'Rylan look' when it comes to accentuating eyes and cheekbones.
Rylan's flawless skin is the result of lots of exfoliating, fake-tanning and moisturising

Preparation is key to get Rylan's skin ready. To get the look
exfoliate with the Vita Liberata Superfine Skin Polish, which is suitable for
face and body. This effective scrub contains superfine jojoba beads to loosen dead
cells and smooth the skin surface while the concentrate creates the
perfect nourishing base for tanning (less likely to peel and the tan
will last longer too). Massage the polish concentrate onto dry skin and rinse off in the
shower. Pay particular attention to areas such as elbows, knees,
knuckles and ankles, then rinse and dry thoroughly.
We then prepare his skin further with our Vita Liberata Skin Plumping
Peptide Mist, which regulates the pH of the skin with conditioning
extracts to ensure a sun kissed tan and a better fade. Add a tiny bit of lotion to the knees, ankles, feet to act as a barrier.
Rylan has a Vita Liberata spray tan on the show but to get his look at
home apply the Vita Liberata pHenomenal Tanning Mousse for a 2-3 week
natural looking tan with a perfect fade, every time. Put the mousse
on the Vita Liberata Tanning Mittapply to the skin in circular sweeping
movements to thighs and blending down lightly over knees and around
calves. Be careful when applying to hands and feet and make sure you
rub around your wrists and the backs of your hands to blend the tan with
your arms, and into your ankles and the top of your feet to blend with
your legs. Leave overnight to develop.
Rylan owes his perma-tan to Vita Liberata tanning products
apply the Vita Liberata Body Moisturiser and Illuminisers to give the
body a beautiful Rylan glow.To give an immaculate Rylan flawless finish
we use a small amount of
Rimmel BB Cream to even out his skintone, then apply Touch Eclat to mask
imperfections – of which Rylan has none – where needed. To set,
lightly dust with a tiny amount of translucent powder; preferably HD
eyebrows are tinted so I run over with some clear brow gel to keep his
brows in place. I then use an eyelash curler to lengthen his lashes. I then use a tiny
amount of black mascara, swiping once over his lashes. I make sure I
wipe the excess on a tissue beforehand for a natural, non clumpy look. For
the eyes I trace with a Rimmel Kohl Pencil in the water line. I then
define the eyes by using a soft Rimmel Kohl Pencil around the top
and bottom of the eye; just above the lash line. Then I apply a little
clear lipgloss to my finger and run it across his eye lids to give him
that wet look he loves. Then using the remaining clear lipgloss on my
finger, I run it underneath the eye and above the eye to smudge away;
until it gives him a lived in rock and roll look
Yves Saint Laurent's Touche Eclat, left, is great for fixing skin imperfections, and Rimmel's kohl eyeliner, right, pencil is great for defining eyes, says Julia Carta
Rylan then sucks in his cheekbones (he loves high cheekbones) and we
contour them with a bronzer and on top of the cheeks he has a
highlighter wake me up instant Shimmer Touch in Shimmering Sand 004. We then finish with a sheer gloss with a little hint of pink.
To keep Rylan's hair in place, his hair-styling team use TRESemme glosses, waxes and holding sprays.
