Dewy skin in just three mins
22:56 GMT, 22 August 2012
We spend 15 minutes applying make-up every day, according to a recent survey. Here, top make-up experts reveal the tips and short-cuts that will have you looking your best in just three minutes . . .
Quick fixes: How to look beautiful in minimal time
The quickest way to get a flawless complexion is with mineral powder make-up, says Dani Guinsberg, who recommends Bellapierre Loose Mineral 5-in-1 Foundation (34.99, House of Fraser).
‘First, moisturise your face, then use a nice big fluffy brush to pick up the loose powder from the lid of your compact and buff small circles on your face,’ she says.
‘Keep the action going until the powder blends evenly into your skin. The result’s so good that you don’t need foundation underneath or concealer on top.
‘And as an extra time-saving bonus, wearing mineral make-up means you can apply a cream blusher or liquid bronzer over the top — something that gets messy with other, heavier powders.’
For a less expensive mineral powder, try FashionistA Ready To Wear Loose Powder, 7.
If you’ve had a bad night’s sleep and the strain is showing in your face, the creative director of New CID Cosmetics, Rupert Kingston, has a quick fix.
‘Start your morning make-up with a fluid concealer to cover up dark shadows. Apply it under each eye, patting gently with the pad of your finger and blending the colour down onto your cheekbones.
‘Then, if you still feel you need foundation before you face the world, dot a little in the centre of each cheek, your forehead, nose and chin and use your fingers to blend it outwards.’
A reliable and easy-to-use fluid concealer is Dr Hauschka Liquid Concealer (16.95, drhauschka.co.uk).
Celebrity make-up expert Cassie Lomas suggests doubling up products when you’re in a rush to get ready.
‘For example, a matte brown eyeshadow can be effectively used as a brow definer and eyeliner,’ she says. The best on the market is Bobbi Brown’s Hot Stone, 16.50 — a medium ashy brown shade that goes on like silk.
Perfect brows and lashes: Use Body Shop slanted brush, left, and Benefit mascara
Most of us waste precious time correcting smudged eye make-up, but having the right tools can speed up your routine. ‘Different shaped applicator brushes will allow you to apply product in multiple ways, but it’s important to invest in good brushes, as these help your make-up go on quickly and easily,’ says Cassie.
‘For perfect brows in a rush, try a stiff brush like Mac’s 208 Angled Brow Brush, 16, which is great for definition. For eyeliner, use a fine tapered brush, such as Mac’s 209 Eye Liner Brush, 16.’
Less expensive options that are also good quality include Body Shop’s Slanted Brush, 9, which is good for brows, and Eco Tools Smudge Eyeliner Brush, 4.99, Boots.
Finish the look by applying Maybelline Mascara Volume Express Colossal Black Waterproof, 7.19, which is such an intense black that you need only one coat. Or for those with a less-than-steady hand, try Benefit’s They’re Real, 18.50, — a mascara that’s remarkably easy to apply thanks to its clever spiky tip.
There’s a neat trick that means you can sidestep blusher but still get a glow.
Cassie Lomas recommends you smile and, using your finger, dot your lip colour into the centre of each cheek and blend well in light, circular movements.
Cassie recommends her favourite, Bourjois Colorissimo Lip Palettes, 7.99.
EASY EVENING REFRESH
When you’re in a rush to go out in the evening, don’t attempt to remove all your make-up and start all over again.
Try the Nars Multiple Stick (29, John Lewis), a multi-tasking hero.
‘It will work on eyes, lips or cheeks,’ says make-up expert Dani Guinsberg.
A good shade for almost all skin tones is Copacabana.
‘It adds a nice highlight to the cheekbones, and a great shimmer to eyelids and lips.’
Celebrity make-up artist Lisa Eldridge says a good trick is to spray a cloud of facial mist (she uses Caudalie Beauty Elixir, 32, Boots) into the air and walk through it, lifting your face into the mist.
‘There’s nothing quite like it for refreshing your make-up base. It’s a great tip if you come home from work and have no time to get ready to go straight out again,’ she says. It works just as well with Evian Spray (3.49, Boots).
For an easy evening eye make-up look, Dani Guinsberg suggests using a soft eyeliner pencil. ‘Line all around your eyes, then use your finger or a cotton bud to soften any hard lines,’ she suggests.
‘The more you blend, the smoother it will look. I like Lancome Le Crayon Kohl Eye Liner, 18.50, in Brun, a deep, dark brown shade that suits everyone. It is more flattering than black, but equally dramatic.’
A smart budget alternative is Collection 2000 Intense Colour Supersoft Kohl Pencil in Birdy Song (1.99, Boots).
Finally, it takes two seconds to add lip stain. Use your finger to dab colour along both lips. Try Benefit Benetint, 24.50, or 2True Lip & Cheek Tint, 1.99 at Superdrug.
THIS WEEK'S BEAUTY BULLETIN
The new NARSskin range, pictured right, is a dream for those of us who prefer skincare with a dewy, non-oily texture. The products use light active micro-prisms to give skin a youthful glow. The range includes Aqua Gel Luminous Mask, 27, a fabulous instant hydrator that’s great for sun-parched skin.
The Optimal Brightening Concentrate, 50, is a radiance-boosting serum that can be used under moisturiser or on its own. Both are from narscosmetics.co.uk.
For a luxury boost, try La Prairie’s Advanced Marine Biology Collection. Revitalizing Emulsion (86, John Lewis) can be used all over the face, eyes, neck and decolletage.
THE ULTIMATE SECRET INGREDIENT
It seems we can’t get away from the beauty industry’s love affair with argan oil, which has been used for centuries in Morocco to repair and protect skin and hair.
The new Argan+ Precious Oil Elixir (12.99, Boots) is a multi-tasking blend that can be used as a super-hydrating face oil to repair dry knees and elbows, protect your hair against split ends, and to nourish your nails.
And one of the summer’s best buy mascaras, the new 17 Blow Out Mascara, 6.29, pictured right, has a thickening formula enriched with vitamin E and protein-rich argan oil to help condition lashes. The huge brush is designed to cover every lash from root to tip.
A BARGAIN FOR THE BOYS
The growth in men’s grooming shows no sign of stopping. Men’s skin is thicker than women’s and produces more oil.
Though their skin is less dry, they have larger pores, so can be more prone to blackheads than women. Daily shaving can make their faces more sensitive, too.
Superdrug’s Men’s Invigorating Peel Off Mask, pictured right, is packed with ingredients, including spearmint oil to re-energise skin, while the Men’s Liquorice Mud Mask includes Dead Sea salts, which are good for boosting tired complexions.
It is best to apply a mask once a week to freshly shaved skin to see maximum benefits, as the ingredients will be absorbed more quickly. Both cost 99p each, available at Superdrug.
